Book Description
This anthology is devoted to the theoretical and experimental study of coherent phenom ena in quantum optics. Considerable attention is devoted to the investigation of cooperative effects in multilevel molecular and atomic systems. The theoretical analysis is based on a single approach, using the theory of groups, which makes it possible to present the results in a compact and physically elegant form. The results of a detailed experimental and theoretical investigation of the photon echo, self-induced transparency, and nutation are presented. The theory of a coherent resonant mechanism for the interaction of laser radiation with multi atomic molecules which causes "prompt" dissociation is presented. A number of applied pos sibilities, in particular, the control of radiation by laser light and laser isotope separation, are analyzed. v CONTENTS Coherent Physics and Its Applications. • . . • • . . • . . . . . . . . . . • • • • . . . • . . . . 1 L. Book Description
This volume contains the lectures and communications presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (NATO ARW 900857) which was held May 5-10, 1991 at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. A scientific commitee made up of P.P. Lambropoulos (USC & Crete), P.8. Corkum (NRC, Ottawa), and H. B. vL. van den Heuvell (FOM, Amsterdam) guided the organizers, A.D. Bandrauk (Sherbrooke) and S.C. Wallace (Toronto) in preparing a programme which would cover the latest advances in the field of atom and molecule laser interactions. Since the last meeting held in July 1987 on "Atomic and Molecular Processes with Short Intense Laser Pulses", NATO ASI vol 1718 (Plenum Press 1988), considerable progress has been made in understanding high intensity effects on atoms and the concomitant coherence effects. After four years, the emphasis is now shifting more to molecules. The present volume represents therefore this trend with four sections covering the main interests of research endeavours in this area: i) Atoms in Intense Laser-Fields ii) Molecules in Intense Laser Fields iii) Atomic Coherences iv) Molecular Coherences The experience developed over the years in multiphoton atomic processes has been very useful and is the main source of our understanding of similar processes in molecules. Thus ATI (above threshold ionization) has been found to occur in molecules as well as a new phenomenon, ATD (above-threshold dissociation). Laser-induced avoided crossings of molecular electronic surfaces is also now entering the current language of high intensity molecular processes.

Book Description
As part of the Physics 2010 decadal survey project, the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation requested that the National Research Council assess the opportunities, over roughly the next decade, in atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) science and technology. In particular, the National Research Council was asked to cover the state of AMO science, emphasizing recent accomplishments and identifying new and compelling scientific questions. Controlling the Quantum World, discusses both the roles and challenges for AMO science in instrumentation; scientific research near absolute zero; development of extremely intense x-ray and laser sources; exploration and control of molecular processes; photonics at the nanoscale level; and development of quantum information technology. This book also offers an assessment of and recommendations about critical issues concerning maintaining U.S. leadership in AMO science and technology.

Book Description
The fundamental concept of quantum coherence plays a central role in quantum physics, cutting across disciplines of quantum optics, atomic and condensed matter physics. Quantum coherence represents a universal property of the quantum s- tems that applies both to light and matter thereby tying together materials and p- nomena. Moreover, the optical coherence can be transferred to the medium through the light-matter interactions. Since the early days of quantum mechanics there has been a desire to control dynamics of quantum systems. The generation and c- trol of quantum coherence in matter by optical means, in particular, represents a viable way to achieve this longstanding goal and semiconductor nanostructures are the most promising candidates for controllable quantum systems. Optical generation and control of coherent light-matter states in semiconductor quantum nanostructures is precisely the scope of the present book. Recently, there has been a great deal of interest in the subject of quantum coh- ence. We are currently witnessing parallel growth of activities in different physical systems that are all built around the central concept of manipulation of quantum coherence. The burgeoning activities in solid-state systems, and semiconductors in particular, have been strongly driven by the unprecedented control of coherence that previously has been demonstrated in quantum optics of atoms and molecules, and is now taking advantage of the remarkable advances in semiconductor fabrication technologies. A recent impetus to exploit the coherent quantum phenomena comes from the emergence of the quantum information paradigm.

Book Description
The book presents a systematic study of coherent phenomena in molecule doped rare gas crystals, examplified on bromine and iodine molecules in solid argon and krypton. Ultrashort laser pulses are applied to prepare vibrational wave packets on the molecules. Their dynamics is investigated via the pump-probe method. The priniples of classical and quantum mechanical coherence are introduced in the first chapters together with the concepts of wave packet focusing and fractional revivals. Those are used to deduce the vibrational and electronic decoherence of molecular wave packets in the rare gas host. A novel coherent control scheme based on chirped laser pulse excitation is worked out to manipulate the wave packets. Furthermore, the molecular energy relaxation and the rotational behaviour in the rare gas host are discussed. Apart from the molecular wave packets, coherent phonons of the rare gas crystal are investigated via the pump-probe spectroscopy on the molecule. Those phonons are excited impulsively in a molecular electronic transition and modulate the host density close to the molecule. Due to the special probe situation, only coherent zone boundary phonons show up in the transients.

Book Description
This book provides an overview of the physical phenomena discovered in magnetic molecular materials over the last 20 years. It is written by leading scientists having made the most important contributions to this active area of research. The main topics of this book are the principles of quantum tunneling and quantum coherence of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), phenomena which go beyond the physics of individual molecules, such as the collective behavior of arrays of SMMs, the physics of one-dimensional single–chain magnets and magnetism of SMMs grafted on substrates. The potential applications of these physical phenomena to classical and quantum information, communication technologies, and the emerging fields of molecular spintronics and magnetic refrigeration are stressed. The book is written for graduate students, researchers and non-experts in this field of research.
