This growth has been accelerated during the war, and the British Empire has now an opportunity of increasing its industrial output by the application of this knowledge to the raw materials available in the different parts of the world. The subject in this series of handbooks will be treated from the chemical rather than the engineering standpoint. The industrial aspect will also be more prominent than that of the laboratory. Each volume will be complete in itself, and will give a general survey of the industry, showing how chemical principles have been applied and have affected manufacture. The influence of new inventions on the development of the industry will be shown, as also the effect of industrial requirements in stimulating invention. Excerpt from Coal-Tar and Ammonia, Vol. 1 The fourth edition of this treatise appeared in the year 1909. A new issue being called for, the text of the last edition was thoroughly revised, and the vast amount of fresh matter accumulated in the interval was duly added in the proper places. How important these additions have been, is illustrated by the fact that the number of pages, which amounted to 1178 in the fourth edition, has had to be increased to 1718, although very many of the recent communications and patents have been simply quoted, but not extracted. The enormous development of the new processes for the manufacture of ammonia and its salts is the most important factor for this increase. I may be excused for expressing my hope that the fifth edition will meet with the same favourable reception as its predecessors, and' prove equally useful to all those who are interested, in the industries of coal-tar and Ammonia.
