El autismo comprende un espectro de trastornos del neurodesarrollo que trastocan de forma significativa los patrones de conectividad neural en el cerebro social. En función de la etiología del autismo, se producen alteraciones en procesos específicos del neurodesarrollo que a su vez se reflejan en alteraciones en las habilidades básicas de comunicación socioemocional que determinan el desarrollo cognitivo. De acuerdo con este planteamiento, en la parte primera del libro se exponen las bases psicobiológicas de los trastornos del espectro autista integrando las teorías explicativas propuestas, los factores epigenéticos, los procesos de neurodesarrollo críticos y las alteraciones en el desarrollo socioemocional características del autismo. La parte segunda se centra en el diagnóstico clínico y en la evaluación psicológica dimensional del autismo, abordando el diagnóstico diferencial temprano y los cambios que experimentan las personas con autismo a lo largo del ciclo vital, ya que en un contexto multiprofesional la evaluación psicológica de la conducta socioafectiva es crucial para diagnosticar el autismo en las primeras etapas de la vida. En la parte tercera se exponen los tratamientos y los diferentes programas de intervención con personas autistas. Tras comparar los tratamientos psicoeducativos destacando los basados en el análisis funcional de la conducta, se presentan los programas aplicados en los distintos niveles educativos y se subrayan las iniciativas de intervención orientadas a promover las habilidades socioemocionales de las personas con autismo. La expresión y el reconocimiento de emociones y las interacciones socioafectivas en el autismo son un foco de atención preferente, pues las habilidades de interacción con padres, educadores e iguales son susceptibles de entrenamiento.
