Book Description
Excerpt from Wholesale Price-List, 1897: Burpee's Garden, Farm, and Flower Seeds Dealers who desire to build up a permanent trade should pay no attention to the cut prices, which would seem to indicate (to the inexperienced) that seeds have no intrinsic value whatever. Because of several bankrupt stocks thrown on the market together with the fact that many crops grown without proper selection (largely for firms that have failed disastrously the past season) are offered at any price, the seed trade this season seems to have become largely demoralized. A reaction is sure to follow. Good seeds cannot be handled at a living profit for less than the prices quoted herein. While we do not seek large profits, yet we are not in the business solely for pleasure. Burpee's seeds are the most Widely advertised and among the most popular with American planters. By comparison of the prices quoted in our market gardeners' list, sent herewith, intelligent dealers will readily see that they can make a good margin of profit by handling burpee's seeds, and at the same time build up a paying business. Book Description
Excerpt from Spring Catalog of Choice Flower Seeds, Bulbs and Plants, 1895 F. R. Pierson. A novelty of this year sent Out by. Mr. Pierson, tha'n whom noone is a better judge of Cannas, and the fact that he has attached his name to it'is sufficient guarantee of its quality. It is claimed to. Possess the largest flower and truss of any Carma ever 'seen, while the petals are very broad and well rounded, and recurve more than is ordinarily seen, giving it a very distinct and pleasing appearance. The color is an intense, glowing scarlet, so rich and deep as to be almost a crimson, while the center is tinged with yellow, suggesting the name which was first given it, Golden Heart. It is a dwarf, compact grower, and, as the introducer says, its particular value lies in its exquisite coloring, large size of truss, and perfect flower. We invested largely in this, and have a fine stock, which we offer at a' very low figure. 20 cents each; per dozen per hundred. 4 Feet.
