Book Description
Excerpt from Chipping and Pulping Dead Trees of Four Rocky Mountain Timber Species Many of the dead trees are removed from the sale area at the time of harvesting the green timber, but the bulk of this material is left on the area and becomes a part of the logging residue. More intensive use of dead trees would enhance the raw material base of the region's wood-using industry, facilitate management practices on logged over areas, and help decrease the cost of postharvest cleanup. One possible method of utilizing dead trees in this region is to chip the wood either in the forest or at the mill, for manufacturing into paper. However, the paper making industry needs additional information regarding the processing and quality of the resulting chips. This paper reports the results of two investigations: (1) characteristics of chips from dead down and standing trees, and (2) the pulping characteristics of dead lodgepole pine trees. The studies are discussed separately. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The totalitarian superstate Oceania, ruled by the Party and known as Airstrip One, now includes Great Britain as a province. The Party uses the Thought Police to repress individuality and critical thought. Big Brother, the tyrannical ruler of Oceania, enjoys a strong personality cult that was created by the party's overzealous brainwashing methods. Book Description
The paleontologist and professor of anatomy who co-discovered Tiktaalik, the “fish with hands,” tells a “compelling scientific adventure story that will change forever how you understand what it means to be human” (Oliver Sacks). By examining fossils and DNA, he shows us that our hands actually resemble fish fins, our heads are organized like long-extinct jawless fish, and major parts of our genomes look and function like those of worms and bacteria. Your Inner Fish makes us look at ourselves and our world in an illuminating new light. This is science writing at its finest—enlightening, accessible and told with irresistible enthusiasm.

Book Description
"Pinus radiata (radiata pine) is a versatile, fast-growing, medium-density softwood, suitable for a wide range of end-uses. Its silviculture is highly developed, and is built on a rm foundation of over a century of research, observation and practice. Radiata pine is often considered a model for growers of other plantation species. This book explores current knowledge of, and experience with radiata pine forest plantation management and examines its long-term sustainability. Radiata pine management needs to integrate the biological aspects of tree-growing, with socio-economics, management objectives, practical considerations and other constraints and opportunities. Although stands of radiata pine may appear to be simple, they are actually quite complex ecosystems because they contain large, long-lived trees that change dramatically over time and interact in changing ways with the environment and with other organisms. The focus of this book is on the principles and practices of growing radiata pine sustainably. It also looks ahead to emerging challenges facing radiata pine plantation management, such as the effects of climate change, new diseases and other threats, and meeting changing product needs and societal demands."--Page 4 of cover.
