Book Description
Examines the rivalry between the US and Britain over China between World War II and the Korean War, a link that has been neglected by scholars distracted by the dominant theme of the Cold War. Finds that the two governments did not collaborate in any significant manner, that the succession from one imperial power to another was not particularly friendly, that the British considered the US fetish for antagonizing Mao Tse Tung misguided and dangerous, that the US missed its chance to consolidate power in the region and began the slide to Viet Nam in 1950, and that Britain had no choice by then but to tie their wagon to the wayward US in order to salvage the remnants of British imperial spoil. Book Description
Excerpt from China and the Far East The following chapters were first delivered as addresses during the recent second decennial celebration of the founding of Clark University. Under the general direction of the President, Dr. G. Stanley Hall, each Department arranged for a gathering of specialists who should give a series of lectures upon topics of present interest in its special field. The Department of History held a conference upon China and the Far East. The aim was two-fold: first, to emphasize the importance of presenting in school and college work the leading features of the development of the Eastern world - a subject that better illustrates the working of the laws of history, and is of more vital importance to the civilization of today, than much that forms the subject matter of the usual history courses; second, to do its part in furthering a more general and accurate knowledge of Far Eastern conditions. During the nineteen sessions of the conference, the lectures and papers of the forty-five authorities who took part in the meetings covered nearly every aspect of the situation in the Orient - political, social, economic, military, educational and religious. It was the original intention to publish all of the proceedings in a single volume, but as this would make the work of unwieldy size, it was decided to exclude the shorter addresses, together with all the material upon the Philippines and India, and to publish only certain of the more formal papers upon China, Japan and Korea. Book Description
The Far East: A Concise History summarizes the history of three Far East or East Asian countries — China, Japan, and Korea. This book begins with an introduction to the three Asian countries’ geographical features, climatic conditions, agricultural features, racial affinities, heritage, common linguistic features, and common political features. The rest of the chapters discuss the Far East in ancient and medieval times; Far Eastern civilization at its zenith; era of Western domination; Japan as the great power of the Far East; and growth of Chinese nationalism. The greater East Asia war; triumph of communism in China; and recovery of Japan are also deliberated. A list of maps illustrated throughout this text is likewise provided. This publication is intended primarily for use in schools, colleges, and universities as an introductory textbook on East Asian countries.
