Book Description
The C. elegans gene bir-1 was identified as being a homologue of the Inhibitor of Apoptosis Proteins (IAPs). These are known regulators of apoptosis in both insects and mammals. I showed in my previous lab that rather than playing a role in regulating the well-characterized apoptotic machinery in C. elegans, bir-1 instead plays an essential role in cytokinesis. Furthermore% this role appears to be evolutionarily conserved as a mammalian homologue of bir-1 could functionally complement bir-1 in C. elegans.
