Indigenous sheep genetic resources are not only vital for their economic and cultural value but also for their scientific value since they harbour unique genetic variants which confer traits enabling them to survive in harsh environments with very minimal input if any. Unfortunately such genetic resources are threatened with extinction due to the indiscriminate crossbreeding with their exotic counterparts that seem more productive but require a lot more economic investment. Instituting conservation efforts for indigenous sheep is really overdue but this can only be done after their distribution is appreciated through characterization both at the molecular as well as phenotypic level.

Ethiopia is ranked first in livestock population. This huge livestock poulation is promising for the country future development. The sector provided 17% and 50 of the total GDP and Agricultural GDP.It has also created many employmeents. But this sector has not yet not full utilized. It needs more attention and this paper will have considerable roes for livestock development. Since the country has many agroecology and weather condition, livestock bussiness becomes profitable. This study was aimed to generate organized information on physical characteristics, selective breeding objectives, traits preferences and production system of native sheep types in Habru and Gubalafto districts of North Wollo Zone under smallholders' management conditions. The sheep types in the study areas were also small in size thus careful cross breeding with other large sized indigenous sheep types should be considered but genetic improvement programmes for the sheep types should be built considering farmer breeding practice, production system and trait preference.

Sustainable use, development and conservation of the world's livestock genetic resources are of vital importance to agriculture, food production, rural development and the environment. In recognition of the need to develop and effective framework for the management of these resources and to address the threat of genetic erosion, 109 countries came together in September 2007 at the first International Technical Conference on Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture held in Interlaken, Switzerland. The Conference adopted the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources- which includes 23 strategic priorities for action to promote the wise management of these vital resources. The Global Plan of Action is the outcome of a country-driven process of reporting, analysis and discussion, which also resulted in the preparation of the State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, the first comprehensive global assessment of livestock diversity and its management. The Conference also adopted the Interlaken Declaration on Animal Genetic Resources, which affirms countries' commitment to the implementation of the global Plan of Action and to ensuring that the world's livestock biodiversity is utilised to promote global food security and remain available to future generations.
