Interfaces exist in every geotechnical system in many forms and at multiple scales. Although historically, they are often considered to be the weak link in a system, particularly as the result of a number of unexpected catastrophic failures, new insight gained over the past twenty years by researchers around the world has shown that it is possible to select combinations of materials and design an engineered interface so that it is at least as strong as the surrounding materials. These new insights have been gained as a result of experimental study, numerical modeling and analytical investigation of successful and failed systems. While individual technical papers have been presented and/or published in various forums and proceedings over the years, no technical event has ever been convened for the sole purpose of allowing for exchange of information and ideas pertaining to geotechnical interfaces. The research symposium held in September 2008 in Atlanta Georgia, USA, in conjunction with the Fourth International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials (IS Atlanta 2008) at the Georgia Institute of Technology on The Characterization and Behavior of Interfaces addressed this deficiency and the papers presented at that event are contained in this publication. IOS Press is an international science, technical and medical publisher of high-quality books for academics, scientists, and professionals in all fields. The notion of “interface” is a universal topic of research in material sciences. Interfaces are responsible for many of the magnetic, electrical, optical and mechanical properties of materials and therefore need to be characterize. The focus of this work is to bring a new understanding of the interfacial mechanical properties of materials by characterizing two industrial components which properties are governed by their interfaces. First, we address the notion of coating and adhesion by characterizing the hardness and microstructure of a 17-4PH steel substrate subjected to a grit blasting surface treatment followed by the deposition of a cermet coating by high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF). The hardness was characterized using nanoindentation and the microstructure were imaged by optical and electron microscopy. The results showed a strong impact of the surface treatment on the interfacial microstructure and hardness of the substrate revealing a potential weakening of the interfacial adhesion because of it. Then, in light of the results gathered, a similar method was applied to the characterization of an aluminum foam. However, the aluminum foam is a much more complex material and requires a multiscale approach. The structure and microstructures were characterized by several techniques to account for the multiscale nature of the material. Similarly, the mechanical properties were determined by diverse procedures. The results unveil a particularly inhomogeneous material at all scales resulting in non-uniform mechanical properties. The strong interdependence of the macroscopic and microscopic properties is highlighted and gives a better understanding of the mechanical behavior of the foam.

In this dissertation, an innovative approach combining continuum mechanics and atomistic simulations is exposed to develop a nanomechanics theory for modeling and predicting the macroscopic behavior of nanomaterials. This nanomechanics theory exhibits the simplicity of the continuum formulation while taking into account the discrete atomic structure and interaction near surfaces/interfaces. There are four primary objectives to this dissertation. First, theory of interfaces is revisited to better understand its behavior and effects on the overall behavior of nanostructures. Second, atomistic tools are provided in order to efficiently determine the properties of free surfaces and interfaces. Interface properties are reported in this work, with comparison to both theoretical and experimental characterizations of interfaces. Specifically, we report surface elastic properties of groups 1011 transition metals as well as properties for low-CSL grain boundaries in copper. Third, we propose a continuum framework that casts the atomic level information into continuum quantities that can be used to analyze, model and simulate macroscopic behavior of nanostructured materials. In particular, we study the effects of surface free energy on the effective modulus of nano-particles, nanowires.

Understanding wave phenomena at material interfaces is an important problem in non-destructive evaluation / material characterization. Modeling the behavior of the interface presents interesting opportunities in this field. The present work attempts to understand the effect of an interface on transient and steady-state wave propagation through a bi-material system. Horizontally polarized shear waves (SH) are chosen as candidates in the analysis. The interface itself is considered to be spring-like with non-linear load-displacement characteristics. The non-linear behavior of the spring can easily be treated as approximate linearized segments. Transient analytical solution forms for reflected and transmitted waves are obtained by considering linear spring interface model using Cagniard-de Hoop technique. Numerical results for time-harmonic SH wave interaction are obtained considering a non-linear spring model using perturbation technique. The methodology presented should enable a practicing engineer to draw insights into interface strength / damage.
