Controlled-Atmosphere Storage of Starking Delicious Apples in the Pacific Northwest (Classic Reprint)
Author: Harold A. Schomer
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781396033933
Category : House & Home
Languages : en
Pages : 20
Book Description
Excerpt from Controlled-Atmosphere Storage of Starking Delicious Apples in the Pacific Northwest The better appearance and' texture of Starking Delicious apples in the best of the c.a. Storage lots, compared with the check lots, was accompanied by a loss of varietal flavor. However, the fruit could withstand prolonged exposure at room temperature (shelf life) without developing stale, acetaldehyde flavor. The fruit showed considerable core and flesh browning in the modified atmosphere lots after a week or more at room temperature. Activated carbon was effective as an air purification agent throughout the season and minimized box odors and off-flavors caused by box odors. Its use in controlled atmosphere storage appears justified on this basis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Book Description
Excerpt from Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide Levels for Controlled-Atmosphere Storage of Starking and Golden Delicious Apples The following experiments were conducted with Starking Delicious and Golden Delicious apples to determine the optimum oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, the effect of the length of time to reach 5 percent oxygen after the room is sealed, and the effectiveness of mono ethanolamine as a carbon dioxide scrubbing solution. This study was part of a broad pro gram of research to reduce deterioration and to prolong the life of fresh produce moving through marketing channels.
