Book Description
Excerpt from Census of Newfoundland and Labrador, 1911: Table 1., Population, Sex, Condition, Denomination, Profession, &C It is impossible to account satisfactorily for the low average rate of increase for the seven years from 1884 to 1891. There are no figures show ing the births and deaths for that period, nor are there any returns of emigration. The increase of total population in this Census over that of 1901 is or per cent., which is a slight increase on the percentage for the previous ten years. From the records of Vital Statistics it is found that for ten years since the Census of 1901 there were births and deaths in the Colony. The excess of would be the natural growth of the population, which, by these figures, should now total being an increase of per cent. For the ten years. From the records of Emigration and Immigration during the ten years it is found that the loss to the population of the Colony by such means is people, or about per cent. Of the population of 1901. Subtracting this loss from the population with natural increase added, we find that, according to the records of Vital Statistics and of Emigration, the present population should be 243, 333. By the present Census Returns it IS found that the population 18 242, 619, thus showing but a small difference of 714 persons between the two methods of computation. This affords a real and valuable check upon the Census, and in the present instance proves that the Census has been correctly taken.
