Caught by the Collar
Author: Eugene Akins
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1640799834
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 244
Book Description
Caught by the Collar is an attempt to shed light on the inaccuracies and inefficiencies in the teachings and methodology of teaching in the Pentecostal church. In too many instances, sincere followers of Christ are lost in a quagmire of unanswered questions and errant doctrine. They end up with stunted or stagnant growth and sometimes turn away from Christ altogether. In many cases, these errors and confused teachings can be directly connected with the ideas that the Bible is confusing or contradictory. It is unfortunate that for so many years so many church leaders have either failed to recognize this issue or have intentionally chosen not to address it. In fact, holding on to and continuing to teach ideology and principles that are out of line with scriptures sounds suspiciously like teaching "another gospel," which the Bible specifically speaks against. As a lifetime member of this denomination, Eugene Akins has personally experienced the confusion caused when scripture is misinterpreted, the failure that occurs when scripture is not implemented, and the heartbreak that is precipitated by clergymen who should be in some other line of work. Many of the members of these churches are caught in what they have been told versus what they know and understand. They are caught in traditions and hand-me-down word bites versus the truth of the scriptures, and when the clergy is primarily responsible for all this clutter, church members are caught by the collar.

Caught Between
Author: Abdul Bah
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 9780595895274
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 228
Book Description
Many people in the West have concluded that Islam is inherently a very violent religion, based largely on the upsurge of radical Islam and its willingness to use indiscriminate violence to drive its message. What is more worrying to most though is the seemingly "tacit" approval of most Muslims of this strategy manifested by the lack of strong condemnations from the broader Muslim community. With its close proximity to the Middle East and North Africa and its cultural and commercial ties to the US and the Americas, Europe has naturally become the new logistical center of radical Islam. The book gives an insight of mostly Muslim residents of four major European cities-Amsterdam, Paris, Munich and London-on the causes and effects of terrorism, their role in that struggle, where things are likely headed and some possible solutions to what some have described as a "clash of civilizations". All exchanges between the author and respondents are outlined-straightforward and unfiltered-as they occurred, with some relevant background information to help clarify the particular situation being discussed. It is worth noting that there is no support or indictment of any religion from the author's perspective although it is very interesting to find out how religion is used to justify-sometimes implicitly-the views of the respondents.

Modernism in the Streets
Author: Marshall Berman
Publisher: Verso Books
ISBN: 1784784990
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 452
Book Description
Marshall Berman was one of the great urbanists and Marxist cultural critics of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and his brilliant, nearly sui generis book All That Is Solid Melts Into Air is a masterpiece of the literature on modernism. But like many New York intellectuals, the essay was his characteristic form, accommodating his multifarious interests and expressing his protean, searching exuberant mind. This collection includes early essays from and on the radical '60s, on New York City, on literary figures from Kafka to Pamuk, and late essays on rock, hip hop, and gentrification. Concluding with his last essay, completed just before his death in 2013, this book is Berman's intellectual autobiography, tracing his career as a thinker through the way he read the 'signs in the street'.
