Book Description
Medicaid patients hospitalized for psychiatric disorders average shorter stays than privately insured mental patients - even though they tend to have more severe conditions and symptoms. Results show that Medicaid psychiatric patients are more severely ill than privately insured patients and are more likely to be diagnosed as psychotic, indicating they have a severe mental disorder. Privately insured patients, on the other hand, are more apt to be diagnosed as neurotic. Given the differences found in disease severity and case mix, Medicaid psychiatric patients might be expected to have longer hospital stays. Why then do they stay less time than patients covered by private insurance? Probably because Medicaid patients are more likely to be transferred out of the hospital to other types of facilities. Medicaid psychiatric patients, except those with alcoholism, also tend to receive fewer services than privately insured patients with the same illnesses and degrees of severity.
