Book Description
It wouldn't be Christmas without Christmas carols. Virtually every Christian--and many non-Christians--would agree. The songs of Christmas can be heard from all kinds of media and all across the world in many languages. Christmas has become the biggest holiday in the United States and in virtually every land where Christianity has a significant influence. But what does it all mean? What is the enduring message of these Christmas carols? Why do they awaken the mind, move the heart, and inspire the Christlike behavior proclaimed by Jesus, born in Bethlehem? 28 Carols to Sing at Christmas answers those questions. Each carol's history is described by John M. Mulder, and F. Morgan Roberts meditates on its contemporary meaning. The result is a devotional resource that will make your Christmas a spiritual discovery. Here is a book to bring meaning to the mystery of Christ's birth and a message for all the world.

Book Description
Excerpt from Carols, Hymns, and Songs In 7esu, Fount of Pleasure, there is very little borrowed, though the ideas are substantially the same. Similar remarks might be made of several others. Some of them, however, have no connection with any German original. But in each case the words have been written expressly for that one particular mel ody, and each verse has been fitted to that melody while it was in the act of composition. The only way to test a Hymn, is, not merely to read it silently, or even aloud, but to sing it, over and over again, to its own tune. There is nothing in this little book that has not been abundantly subjected to this test before being offered to the public. The fact, that in part of my work I have written words for other people's music, in another part have written music for other people's words, while in the rest I furnish both words and music myself, is some evidence that I have bestowed equal care and labor upon bot/z the things which are essential to good Hymnody. The reason why we have so much of unsatisfactory material thrust upon the Church, is that, for the most part, the writers of the words have known little about music, and the writers of music have had little taste or power in the poetic field, and therefore there was no felt organic connection betwixt the two. In the arrangement of yesu, Fount of Pleasure, I have ventured to harmonize it in the Dorian mode, instead of the usual D minor, which hardly seems to suit the character of the words as well. Book Description
From Andrew Gant, Oxford professor and renowned British composer, The Carols of Christmas is a joyous account of the history behind our favorite carols--from Advent through Epiphany. Everyone loves a carol--in the end, even Ebenezer Scrooge had a soft spot for them! They have the power to evoke a special type of mid-winter joy, like the aroma of gingerbread or the twinkle of lights on a tree. It's a kind of magic. But how did they get that magic? Gant--a choirmaster, church musician, university professor, and writer--tells the story of twenty carols, each accompanied by lyrics and music, unraveling a captivating, and often surprising, tale of great musicians and thinkers, saints and pagans, shepherds and choirboys. Along the way, Gant answers some of the biggest questions he's received about these beloved carols over the years, including: How did the most beloved carols come to be? Why do we sing the versions of carols that we do? How did these carols stand the test of time? Readers get to delve into the history of favorites like "Good King Wenceslas," "Away in a Manger," and "O, Tannenbaum," discovering along the way how "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" came to replace "Hark, how all the welkin' ring" and how Ralph Vaughan Williams applied the tune of an English folk song about a dead ox to a poem by a nineteenth-century American pilgrim to make "O Little Town of Bethlehem." A charming book that brims with anecdote, expert knowledge, and Christmas spirit, The Carols of Christmas is a fittingly joyous account of one of the best-loved musical traditions.
