Book Description
The name of this book is no exaggeration. It includes some of the most gorgeous music that the authors El McMeen and Sandy Shalk know. To make things even more interesting, none of the music was originally written for guitar! In addition to Celtic favorites, El includes his arrangements of two of the most beautiful arias in all of opera: "Che Gelida Manina" from Puccini's "La Boheme" and "My Heart at Thy Sweet Voice" (“Mon Coeur S'ouvre à ta Voix”) from "Samson and Delilah" by Camille Saint-Saëns. Sandy's contributions range from Celtic to French love songs to Stephen Foster, manifesting Sandy's gift for chordal subtleties and innovation. Each piece is in either standard tuning (EADGBE) or Drop D tuning (DADGBE). Written in standard notation and tablature with computer generated audio files of each arrangement.

Mastering the Classical Guitar, Book 1A is the first in a progressive series using a wide variety of musical repertoire and educational material to provide a solid technical foundation for classical guitar students, exposing the full range of the instrument’s potential and repertoire. Book 1A is most appropriate for students with no prior knowledge of the guitar or music theory, or for those who simply want a fresh start with the classic guitar. It is written in three broad sections: Progressive Studies and Pieces, Technical Exercises and Rhythmic Reading. Tips on how to integrate the three sections are provided throughout the book. Every chapter begins with exercises written specifically to improve a certain aspect of one’s playing, followed by various examples from the classical music repertoire and traditional songs from various cultures. While every aspect of classical guitar technique is clearly described and illustrated, students using this book would still benefit from the advice and constructive feedback of a competent teacher. Consequently, teachers will find opportunities to assert their individual teaching perspectives within this method, making it a perfect road map for the instructor and student’s musical journey. Book Description
In the late 19th century, Spanish guitar maker Antonio de Torres established a standard size and form for the classical guitar; in the early 20th century, musicians developed advanced playing techniques that contemporary recitalists refined. By the late 1940s, composers had begun to compose music specifically for the classical guitar, and in the past fifty years there have been over 550 pieces composed expressly for the duo of classical guitar and solo voice. This work provides for the first time an annotated catalog of such compositions. Each entry includes the composer; title; language in which the work is to be sung; dates of composition and copyright; publisher and catalog number; author and text source; voice type required to sing the song as indicated by the score; range and tessitura; and difficulty of the piece for the singer. The annotations touch on additional matters such as whether the piece is part of a song cycle or a collection, and its duration.
