Cette étude a plusieurs objectifs distincts : 1/Définir la qualité physico-chimique des eaux de la Grande Terre et identifier les facteurs succeptibles de modifier la composition des eaux. En effet, aucune étude n'existe encore sur ce sujet en Nouvelle-Calédonie bien que de nombreuses rivières fassent annuellement l'objet de mesures analytiques à l'initiative de DAF ; 2/Caractériser la macrofaune benthique des rivières. Les données taxinomiques existantes et celles acquises au cours de l'étude pourront permettre d'évaluer le taux d'endémisme de cette faune peu connue, d'estimer la diversité biologique des rivières et de localiser les zones qui présentent la biodiversité la plus élevée ; d'étudier les facteurs de répartition de la faune ; 3/Montrer que les macroinvertébrés benthiques peuvent être utilisés en tant que descripteurs des milieux.

Un protocole d'échantillonnage des macroinvertébrés benthiques indicateurs de la qualité des cours d'eau a été mis en place sur le site atelier Allier et un linéaire de la Loire amont. Celui-ci a permis de désigner les unités géomorphologiques seuil comme meilleur lieu d'échantillonnage. Comparativement aux méthodes existant dans divers pays, le protocole MMS-GUR (Macroinvertebrates living in the Mineral Substrates of the Geomorphological Unit Rifle) présente les avantages suivants : 1) Facilité de repérage des seuils et meilleure accessibilité que les autres géoformes. 2) Aire d'échantillonnage réduite. 3) Echantillonnage de surfaces identiques grâce à l'utilisation du filet Surber. 4) Protocole applicable de la source à la disparition des seuils. 5) Gain de temps répercuté sur le coût tant sur le terrain qu'en laboratoire (détermination au genre, mais réduction possible aux EPT) . 6) Possibilité de comparer un ensemble de rivières dans des conditions analogues

Researchers and agencies collect reams of objective data and authors publish volumes of subjective prose in attempts to explain what is meant by environmental quality. Still, we have no universally recognized methods for combining our quantitative measures with our qualitative concepts of environ ment. Not all of our environmental goals should be reduced to mere numbers, but many of them can be; and without these quantitative terms, we have no way of defining our present position nor of selecting positions we wish to attain on any logically established scale of environmen tal values. Stated simply, in our zeal to measure our environment we often forget that masses of numbers describing a system are insufficient to understand it or to be used in selecting goals and priorities for expending our economic and human resources. Attempts at quantitatively describing environmental quality, rather than merely measuring different environmental variables, are relatively recent. This condensing of data into the optimum number of terms with maximum information content is a truly interdisciplinary challenge. When Oak Ridge National Laboratory initiated its Environmental Program in early 1970 under a grant from the National Science Foundation, the usefulness of environmental indicators in assessing the effects of technology was included as one of the initial areas for investigation. James L. Liverman, through his encouragement and firm belief that these indicators are indispensable if we are to resolve our complex environmental problems, deserves much of the credit for the publication of this book.

Often during the last decade, in discharging my responsibilities for the environmental aspects of the water authority's operations and works, I should have been deeply grateful to have had access to a compendium such as this. The lack of a convenient source of data made me aware of the need which I have attempted to fill and in doing so I have drawn on my experiences of the kinds of problem which are presented to biologists in the water industry. The maxim 'half a loaf is better than none' seems particularly apt in this context.
