Book Description
Many wildlife species in India are under tremendous threat from different sources, mainly from poaching, man-animal conflict, and deforestation. Their survival is dependent on strong laws and support from the Government, from the public, from NGOs and particularly from children who will, we hope, become aware of the threat to these endangered species and go on to support strongly the many projects working towards their survival. Fortunately, efforts are being made to rehabilitate many endangered animals like, for example the Tiger, Indian One-horned Rhinoceros, Barasingha, and Gharial. The Asiatic Lion, which adorns the national emblem, is only to be found in the Gir National Park in Gujarat. The central Indian Barasingha in Kanha National Park is the only species of its kind in the world. Some of the other globally important endangered species in India are the Gharial, Hangul, Snow Leopard, Lion-tailed Macaque, and the Gangetic River Dolphin. The primary aim of this book is to create a greater awareness of the real danger to wildlife in India and to promote the preservation of that wildlife.

Leopard Diaries
Author: Sanjay Gubbi
Publisher: Penguin Random House India Private Limited
ISBN: 9354927599
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 254
Book Description
'Evolution is an exquisite artist, even if an unconscious one.'- Eric Dinerstein The leopard is perhaps one of the world's most beautiful creatures. The spots on its body are even romantically called 'rosettes'. It is social but solitary, inconspicuous but significant in numbers, large but elusive, and does not fit any of the pigeonholes of large-cat conservation. In India, the leopard is a poster boy of the fight to preserve wildlife, but in many countries, it faces either ecological or local extinction. A worrying phenomenon, given that these cats carry out important ecosystem services that have not been fully understood yet. In Leopard Diaries: The Rosette in India, Sanjay Gubbi, who has studied and documented the leopard for nearly a decade, gives us a close look at this fascinating creature. From detailing its food habits to throwing new light on how the young are reared, from offering suggestions on tackling leopard-human conflict to imagining the future of this arresting animal, this book is a 360-degree view of the leopard, its ecological context, its fraught relationship with the human world, and how wildlife and human beings can find a way to co-exist.

How Social Movements Imagine
Author: Bobby Luthra Sinha
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040109799
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 243
Book Description
This book examines how micro contextual issues inspire collective social action forms against everyday situations of crises and crimes through an inter-disciplinary, ethnographic, and comparative research conducted among Bishnois and Indian South Africans. Exploring the role of the publics that practise and mobilise their social movement imaginations, the work delves into peoples’ ability to move beyond their immediate contexts and politicise multiple social spaces and discursive spheres around them to project their causes. Mapping an anti-poaching movement spearheaded by the Bishnois of Western Rajasthan in India and an anti-substance abuse movement led by the historical Indian diaspora of South Africa, the author argues that such contemporary forms of organised social action replete with alternative frames, symbols, and repertoires possess key requisites to be understood as the ‘Newer Social Movements’ of the Global South. The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of social and protest movements, migration and diaspora studies, political science, social anthropology, and ethnography.
