Book Description
This book creatively redefines how teacher educators and faculty in secondary and post-secondary language education can become designers with intercultural education in mind. The author aligns theoretical frameworks with practical features for revising the modern language curriculum via themes and novel tasks that transfer language learning from classroom to community, developing communicative competence for mediation and learner autonomy along the way. For novice and experienced instructors alike, this book empowers them to: - design curriculum from transferable concepts that are worthy of understanding and have value within the culture(s) and to the learner; - develop assessments that ask the learner to solve problems, and create products that transfer concepts or address needs of various audiences that they will encounter in community, life, and work; - direct language learners through a spiral, articulated program that supports academic, career and personal goals. Pedagogical features include a glossary of key terms, research-to-practice boxes, scaffolded design tasks, reflection questions and template samples representing language exemplars from the following languages and cultures: Arabic, Chinese, Èdè Yorùbá, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Ladino, Nahuatl, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Te Reo Maori and Urdu. The accompanying online resources offer blank templates, PowerPoints and guides for designing bespoke curricula with key performance assessments.

Book Description
Capoeira is simultaneously a dance, a fight, and a game. Created by the Africans brought to Brazil as slaves beginning in 1500, capoeira was forbidden by law but survived underground. When open practice was allowed in the 1930s it soon became very popular. Capoeira came to America around 1975, and has become widely recognized by dancers and martial artists. The author discusses capoeira's evolution from Brazilian street play into a way of life. The philosophy of capoeira, and the practical and spiritual benefits of this philosophy, are also discussed. Instructions and exercises in intermediate and advanced skills take up where the author's previous book left off. The book includes 100 black-and-white photos and illustrations.

Book Description
Nestor Capoeira, a long-time teacher of capoeira and noted mestre (master), begins this revised edition of his bestseller with an in-depth history of the Brazilian art, giving the most popular theories for the origins and purposes of this movement that combines the grace of dance with lethal self-defense techniques in a unique game-song structure. He discusses some of the most famous capoeristas and their influence on the art. In addition, he describes how the two major branches of capoeira (Angola and Regional) came about and the differences between them. The Little Capoeira Book’s clear descriptions of the game, or jogo, explain the actual application of capoeira, vaguely similar to sparring but very different in purpose and style. The music of capoeira, which is played during all jogo, is also examined, along with its main instrument, the berimbau. The author includes a how-to guide with photographs showing basic moves for beginners, with offensive and defensive applications for simple kicks, takedowns, advanced kicks and movements, head butts, hand strikes, and knee and elbow strikes. Each technique is vividly depicted with drawings that are easy to understand and learn from, and mestre capoeira includes an explanation of both Angola and Regional versions.

Capoeira has travelled beyond the borders of Brazil; it has fallen into the framework of other cultures, and has taken root in foreign mentalities. How did it happen? How has capoeira changed in these countries? What kinds of people choose capoeira in this or that country? What difficulties do coaches face? What do Brazilian masters think of capoeira being practiced outside of Brazil? These questions ignited my curiosity!

Book Description
I can't remember how I first heard about Krav Maga, but I do remember being immediately fascinated. All martial arts have an appeal to most men and their fighting spirit, but Krav Maga's draw owes less to the mystique of many of the traditional disciplines and more to a distinct aura of bad-assitude. It's a simple and effective street fighting self-defense system that's more martial than art. A well-trained practitioner of Krav Maga is basically a walking human weapon. What I discovered is that Krav Maga is a brutally effective tactical mixed martial art and self-defense system that lives up to its reputation. If you too have ever wondered what Krav Maga is all about, I have written you this primer. Here is what you will learn in this book Introduction / What is Krav Maga? History of Krav Maga The Principles of Krav Maga Benefits of Learning Krav Maga How To Get Started in Krav Maga Basic Krav Maga Techniques (With Videos) Krav Maga Stances Krav Maga Punches & Strikes Krav Maga Defenses Against Punches Krav Maga Defenses Against Kicks Krav Maga Knee Techniques Krav Maga How To Fall If Knocked To The Ground Krav Maga Groundwork & Grappling Techniques Krav Maga Ground Fighting Techniques Krav Maga Defenses Against Weapons Krav Maga Defenses Against Bear Hugs Krav Maga Defenses Against Chokes Krav Maga Defenses Against Wrist Grabs Krav Maga Defenses Against Hair Grabs Krav Maga Defenses Against Other Grabs Krav Maga Defenses Against Carjackings, Hostage Situations, etc. Krav Maga Defenses Against Multiple Opponents And much more... Book Description
A groundbreaking investigation into the migration of martial arts techniques across continents and centuries The presence of African influence and tradition in the Americas has long been recognized in art, music, language, agriculture, and religion. T. J. Desch-Obi explores another cultural continuity that is as old as eighteenth-century slave settlements in South America and as contemporary as hip-hop culture. In this thorough survey of the history of African martial arts techniques, Desch-Obi maps the translation of numerous physical combat techniques across three continents and several centuries to illustrate how these practices evolved over time and are still recognizable in American culture today. Some of these art traditions were part of African military training while others were for self-defense and spiritual discipline. Grounded in historical and cultural anthropological methodologies, Desch-Obi's investigation traces the influence of well-delineated African traditions on long-observed but misunderstood African and African American cultural activities in North America, Brazil, and the Caribbean. He links the Brazilian martial art capoeira to reports of slave activities recorded in colonial and antebellum North America. Likewise Desch-Obi connects images of the kalenda African stick-fighting techniques to the Haitian Revolution. Throughout the study Desch-Obi examines the ties between physical mastery of these arts and changing perceptions of honor. Including forty-five illustrations, this rich history of the arrival and dissemination of African martial arts in the Atlantic world offers a new vantage for furthering our understanding of the powerful influence of enslaved populations on our collective social history.
