Medicare HMO's
Author: Jonathan Ratner
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 0788147625
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 60
Book Description
Medicare costs have grown rapidly during the 1990s, & are estimated to increase an average of 8.4% a year through FY 2002. To slow this growth rate, proposals have been made to encourage beneficiaries to join managed care plans. This report examines the inconsistency between the expectation that HMOs would save Medicare money & research findings that HMOs increase the program's costs. It identifies conditions under which Medicare's method can yield payment rates that are too high & suggests improvement directed at problems fostering excess payments. Charts & tables.

Care Without Coverage
Author: Institute of Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309083435
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 213
Book Description
Many Americans believe that people who lack health insurance somehow get the care they really need. Care Without Coverage examines the real consequences for adults who lack health insurance. The study presents findings in the areas of prevention and screening, cancer, chronic illness, hospital-based care, and general health status. The committee looked at the consequences of being uninsured for people suffering from cancer, diabetes, HIV infection and AIDS, heart and kidney disease, mental illness, traumatic injuries, and heart attacks. It focused on the roughly 30 million-one in seven-working-age Americans without health insurance. This group does not include the population over 65 that is covered by Medicare or the nearly 10 million children who are uninsured in this country. The main findings of the report are that working-age Americans without health insurance are more likely to receive too little medical care and receive it too late; be sicker and die sooner; and receive poorer care when they are in the hospital, even for acute situations like a motor vehicle crash.

Medicare HMOs
Author: James C. Cosgrove
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 0788176455
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 52
Book Description
Examines the potential effects of policy changes on (1) the growth of Medicare's managed care program, (2) employers' attempts to administer their respective benefits seasons, (3) taxpayer savings measured against beneficiary protections, & (4) the resources needed by the federal agency that runs Medicare's day-to-day operations. Because a specific annual enrollment period could be established without also limiting beneficiaries' opportunities to change to fee for service, it also discusses the effects of the two policy changes (limiting the enrollment period, & limiting disenrollment opportunities) separately. Charts & tables.
