Dans le cadre d'une rflexion collective anime par le Lamop (UMR 8589) sur la circulation des richesses au Moyen Age, cet ouvrage de rfrence dfinit certains des critres guidant la prise de dcision des seigneurs en matire de politique conomique. Il dmontre que, loin d'tre des surconsommateurs parasites, les seigneurs sont des agents conomiques susceptibles de prendre des dcisions informes, conscients en tout cas de leurs revenus et de l'volution de ceux-ci. Partant de l'analyse des revenus tirs du travail paysan ainsi que de la structure du prlvement opr sur les terres, les auteurs de l'ouvrage tablissent les normes du comportement seigneurial travers une enqute portant sur toute l'Europe occidentale. Au cur du questionnement se trouve toujours la question de la conversion - c'est--dire du moment o les gestionnaires changent de mode de prlvement - et de ses modalits. Il s'agit d'abord d'une opration technique et c'est ainsi qu'elle est ici envisage sous les diffrents aspects qu'il a t possible de retrouver. Les revenus seigneuriaux ne sont pas un donn stable et leur structure, en argent ou en nature, est susceptible d'voluer. Face aux vnements conomiques perceptibles comme l'inflation montaire et la hausse des prix, ou encore l'augmentation de la demande urbaine, les seigneurs ragissent. Des choix sont faits, des dcisions sont prises qui touchent l'organisation mme du prlvement seigneurial. Derrire les transformations dcides ds le XIIe sicle par des acteurs individuels se lit le rapport des seigneurs au march et l'conomie d'change, qui s'avre extrmement complexe. Les tudes de cas proposes les montrent aptes tirer le meilleur parti possible de leur allocation de ressources, sans prjudice bien sr des autres dterminants de leur action puisqu'ils demeurent contraints par un code complexe qui leur permet tout la fois d'assurer et de renforcer leur domination sur le monde paysan et de construire leur prestige, leur pouvoir et leur honneur.

This book examines the forms of estate management in the countryside of Florence and Lucca between the eleventh and the middle of the thirteenth centuries. It argues that their change reflects wider transformations of medieval economic patterns, and specifically the surge in overall demand that occurred in the decades bridging the twelfth and the thirteenth centuries. The reasons for a comparison between the Florentine and the Lucchese countryside lie in the alleged differences of their historical evolution--as it has been outlined by scholars so far. The so-called manorial system (sistema curtense) is believed to have ceased to exist in the Lucchesia around the beginning of the tenth century, whereas in the Fiorentino its disappearance can be dated to the early thirteenth century. Similarly, the Florentine countryside is generally regarded as the birthplace of a particular type of sharecropping regime, the mezzadria poderale, which spread over much of central Italy during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and would later become an essential component of Italian agrarian identity. On the contrary, the mezzadria poderale is thought to have never developed at any point in the history of medieval and early modern Lucchesia--and this was indeed the case with all the coastal areas of Tuscany. The book endeavours to examine the characteristics of estate management in the central Middle Ages in their own right; that is to say, by detaching those transformations from any teleological view, and by placing them within the economic and sociopolitical context of the period 1000-1250.

In The Seigneurial Transformation, Alessio Fiore discusses the transformation of the fabric of power in the kingdom of Italy in the period between the late eleventh century and the early twelfth century. The study analyses the major socio-political change of this period, the crisis of royal and public structures, and the development of seigneurial powers, using as a starting point the structures of power over men and land, and the discourses about the exercise of local power. In his Debt: The First 5000 Years, the anthropologist David Graeber put forward a new grand narrative of world history. From the Late Bronze Age onwards, all across the Near East and Mediterranean, relationships of mutual obligation were transformed into quantifiable and legally enforceable debts. Graeber suggests that this transformation made possible new economic institutions, such as IOUs, coinage, and chattel slavery. It also led to the emergence of modes of thought that have shaped Eurasian philosophical and religious traditions ever since. Debt in the Ancient Mediterranean and the Near East explores the implications of this theory for the history of the Mediterranean and Near East. A distinguished group of ancient historians assesses how well Graeber's interpretations fit current understandings of ancient and late antique economies. At the same time, this volume offers a history of premodern credit systems which takes seriously the dual nature of debt as both quantifiable economic reality and immeasurable social obligation. By exploring the diverse ways in which social relationships were quantified in different ancient and late antique societies, the work introduces a method of writing the history of premodern systems of exchange that departs from the currently dominant paradigm of neo-institutional economics.
