Book Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A fascinating look at how consumers perceive logos, ads, commercials, brands, and products.”—Time How much do we know about why we buy? What truly influences our decisions in today’s message-cluttered world? In Buyology, Martin Lindstrom presents the astonishing findings from his groundbreaking three-year, seven-million-dollar neuromarketing study—a cutting-edge experiment that peered inside the brains of 2,000 volunteers from all around the world as they encountered various ads, logos, commercials, brands, and products. His startling results shatter much of what we have long believed about what captures our interest—and drives us to buy. Among the questions he explores: • Does sex actually sell? • Does subliminal advertising still surround us? • Can “cool” brands trigger our mating instincts? • Can our other senses—smell, touch, and sound—be aroused when we see a product? Buyology is a fascinating and shocking journey into the mind of today's consumer that will captivate anyone who's been seduced—or turned off—by marketers' relentless attempts to win our loyalty, our money, and our minds.

Book Description
Contains 11 modules consist of a number of activities designed to demonstrate the use of the history of mathematics in the teaching of mathematics. Objectives of the Modules: To enable students to develop a much richer understanding of mathematics and its applications by viewing the same phenomena from multiple mathematical perspectives; To enable students to understand the historical background and connections among historical ideas leading to the development of mathematics; To enable students to see how mathematical concepts evolved over periods of time; To provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge of mathematics to various concrete situations and problems in a historical context; To develop in students an appreciation of the history connected with the development of different mathematical concepts; To enable students to recognize and use connections among mathematical ideas; To enable students to understand how mathematical ideas interconnect and build on one another to produce a coherent whole; To lead students to recognize and apply mathematics in contexts outside of mathematics.--Publisher.

Book Description
This book presents the main research veins developed within the framework of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD), a paradigm that originated in French didactics of mathematics. While a great number of publications on ATD are available in French and Spanish, Working with the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic in Mathematics Education is the first directed at English-speaking international audiences. Written and edited by leading researchers in ATD, the book covers all aspects of ATD theory and practice, including teaching applications. The chapters feature the most relevant and recent investigations presented at the 6th international conference on the ATD, offering a unique opportunity for an international audience interested in the study of mathematics teaching and learning to keep in touch with advances in educational research. The book is divided into four sections and the contributions explore key topics such as: The core concept of ‘praxeology’, including its development and functionalities The need for new teaching praxeologies in the paradigm of questioning the world The impact of ATD on the teaching profession and the education of teachers This is the second volume in the New Perspectives on Research in Mathematics Education. This comprehensive casebook is an indispensable resource for researchers, teachers and graduate students around the world.

Book Description
This book offers a unique perspective on ways in which mathematicians: perceive their students' learning; teach; reflect on their teaching practice. Elena Nardi achieves this by employing two fictional, yet entirely data-grounded, characters to create a conversation on these important issues. The construction of these characters is based on large bodies of data including intense focused group interviews with mathematicians and extensive analyses of students' written work, collected and analyzed over a substantial period.

Book Description
The essays in this book provide the first comprehensive treatment of the concept of revolution in mathematics. In 1962 an exciting discussion of revolutions in the natural sciences was prompted by the publication of Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. A fascinating but little knownoffshoot of this debate was begun in the USA in the mid-1970s: can the concept of revolutions be applied to mathematics as well as science? Michael Crowe declared that revolutions never occur in mathematics, while Joseph Dauben argued that there have been mathematical revolutions and gave someexamples. The original papers of Crowe, Dauben, and Mehrtens are reprinted in this book, together with additional chapters giving their current views. To this are added new contributions from nine further experts in the history of mathematics who each discuss an important episode and consider whether it was arevolution. This book is an excellent reference work and an ideal course text for both graduate and undergraduate courses in the history and philosophy of science and mathematics.

Book Description
This book summarizes current knowledge regarding the theory of estimation for semiparametric models with missing data, in an organized and comprehensive manner. It starts with the study of semiparametric methods when there are no missing data. The description of the theory of estimation for semiparametric models is both rigorous and intuitive, relying on geometric ideas to reinforce the intuition and understanding of the theory. These methods are then applied to problems with missing, censored, and coarsened data with the goal of deriving estimators that are as robust and efficient as possible.

Book Description
Jean-Baptiste Say (1767–1832) was one of the first great economists to have laid down the foundations of economic science. Author of the famous Treatise on Political Economy in 1803, which was revised and re-edited on several occasions, he published numerous other works including a voluminous Complete Course in Practical Political Economy in 1828–9. He also taught political economy successively from 1815 until his death in three Parisian establishments: the Athénée, the Conservatory of Arts and Trades, and the Collège de France. The texts in which Say exposes his approach to political economy have not been available in the English language until now except for the fourth edition of the ‘Preliminary Discourse’ which serves as an introduction to the Treatise. This book presents a translation which renders his works accessible to the English speaking world. For the first time, English readers will be able to become directly immersed in Say’s principal texts, where he develops his conception of political economy. Jean-Baptiste Say and Political Economy proposes a translation of a selection of eleven of Say’s texts. The first three are versions of the ‘Preliminary Discourse’ from the Treatise’s editions of 1803, 1814 and 1826 with the variations of the editions of 1817, 1819 and 1841. The following four texts are the opening discourses pronounced at the Conservatory in 1820 and 1828 and the Collège de France in 1831 and 1832. The eighth text is the ‘General Considerations’ which open the Complete Course in Practical Political Economy of 1828, with the variations of the 1840 re-edition. The final three texts are those Say devotes to ‘the progress of political economy’ in what is akin to a history of economic thought. This volume is of great importance to economic historians and people studying Jean-Baptiste Say, as well as those who are interested in economic theory and philosophy and political economy.
