Book Description
Excerpt from Bygone Nottinghamshire In connection with the illustrations I have a pleasing task to perform, in thanking the gentle man to whom this work is dedicated for contributing the panoramic view of F arndon, Stoke, and Nottingham, from a drawing evidently contemporary with and relating to the Battle of Stoke-field, copied by him from the original in the British Museum and in thanking Mr. Robert White, of vvorksop, the northern light Of our local history, for contributing the engraving of the grand Old priory gatehouse Of his town. In performing this office I must not overlook my son, Mr. W. H. Stevenson, the editor of the Records of the Borough of Nottingham, the Calendar of Close Rolls. Ed. II., 1307-1313, etc., to whom I am indebted for the Forest-boundary map of AD 1227, and assistance in revising the proofs. Book Description
Excerpt from Memorials of Old Nottinghamshire The present editor has tried to choose his subjects from a field as varied as possible, and he ventures to think that papers will be found here which will be welcome both on account of the matter to be found in them and because of the novelty of the subject. Nor must it be thought for a moment that the choice of interesting subjects is by any means exhausted. Enough material could easily be found to fill a second and perhaps even a third volume. Book Description
Excerpt from Old Nottingham: Its Streets, People, &C.; Reprinted From the Nottingham Daily Express, November 7th, 1901-June 2nd, 1902 As a native and old resident of Nottingham, retaining a distinct recollection of the town in many parts as regards its general appearance, con dition, and extent, for between sixty and seventy years, I have long considered that much might still be said respecting it, and of considerable in terest, without in any way trespassing upon ground which others have previously occupied. Regarding its general history, but little has been written during recent years; and going back to Throsby's time ha Opportunities were much more cir cumscribed than fortunately is now the case, for in creased light and interest has been thrown upon what occurred in the old town and the doings of the people from the publication during the last twenty years by the Council of a large portion of the Borough Records, which, with the chief of our local histories, will form the basis of the marks which I propose to make on the above subject. These to some extent will app] to the social life of the people, their mode of con noting the business of the town. The various changes therein, &c., and in some degree connect the old town with its more modernised conditions.
