There are hundreds of high schools and academies, as well as colleges, where thus the method curses the subject. This means a great deal. What a plea against such methods was the whole life Of Prof. Agassiz! There are being made Well directed efforts, in some Of our cities and towns, to have the subject introduced into the common schools, and this fact, with the other fact that the subject is in our high school pro grammes, permits us to estimate the condition of natural history in the schools to-day. The reason for the present state of things is perhaps unimportant, but it is not because educators for half a cen tury have not been agreed as to the principles which govern the case. It is curious to observe that in the face of this agreement, and the fact that the statement of the principles has become so frequent in convention as to be almost stale, few in authority have essayed to take the first logical step in the indicated direction. The Speaker prefaced his remarks upon the condition of natural Science as it ought to be in the schools, by saying that he was not a proficient in the subject, and in no sense a specialist, being person ally more interested in other subjects. Excerpt from Bulletin of the Essex Institute, Vol. 29: 1897 Owing to the illness and absence of the Secretary, Henry M. Brooks, the Executive Committee prepared a full report of the work of the Institute during the past year. This report was read by President Rantoul. It showed that the year just closed had been a prosperous one for the Institute, and while the work of the Society had been hampered by the continued illness of the Secretary, the Assistant Librarian and the 2d Assistant Librarian, yet the routine work had been carried on and the Institute was in good condition, - its publications had contained articles of great merit which must prove of value to the historical and scientific student. The regular lectures and the less formal meetings, where papers were read by members of the Institute, were noted and highly commended. The matter of field meetings was considered and a continuance advised. The pressing need of more room for the many hundreds of volumes received by donation during the past year was referred to and a strong appeal for the necessary funds to bring about this much desired result was made. Reference was made to the death of Mr. William J. Foster, who had of late been of great assistance at the rooms during the illness of the Secretary. Excerpt from Bulletin of the Essex Institute, Vol. 21: Jan., Feb., March, 1889 Genera Theridion, Pholcus, Drassus and Lycosa, - a paper the points of which appear to fully support the views which were advanced in the discussion. In brief, according to Morin, the nucleus of segmentation in the eggs studied by him lies at the centre of the egg and not until the third seg mentation does the yolk segment. The segmentation is perfectly regular and not until the one hundred and twen ty-eight-cell stage is reached, do the nuclei and surround ing protoplasm reach the surface and form the blastoderm, at which time they separate from the yolk pyramids, which now again forms an unnucleated homogeneous mass. The blastoderm now thickens upon the ventral surface, and from its centre cells are budded inwards, some of which re main between the parent cells and the yolk, while others sink into the yolk itself. As will readily be seen this pro cess, which gives rise to both meso and entoderm, is easily brought into full accord with the gastrulation in Crangon, and other types. Morin does not regard the primitive cumulus as of importance in the formation of the germ layers, since, in his experience, it does not arise until after they are formed; indeed it does not appear at any stage in Theridion. The entoderm nuclei sink into the yolk where they remain distinct - much as I have described them in Limulus p. 530, figs. 45 and 47) -until shortly be fore hatching. Excerpt from Bulletin of the Essex Institute, Vol. 20: 1888 Montserrat is a section of Beverly quite abreast of its neighbors in point of interest. Recent real estate opera tions and road-building movements have brought it into conspicuous notice. The new pipe road of the Beverly vater Works, graded in 1885, opens a delightful di'ive-way or ramble from the new station west of north to the foot of Wenham Lake, and the new route takes the pleasure seeker midway between the two reservoirs of Salem and of Beverly and close to each, from the top of both of which Spread out before the eye, wonderful and quite dissimilar views of southern Essex. The Salem reservoir, resting on Chipman Hill1 on the left side of the pipe road, is nearer Montserrat and Salem and commands a more varied view than that of Beverly. When filled to the twenty foot limit its water-surface stands at a height of one hun dred and forty-two feet above mean high tide. Of course, the gravel walk about its top is several feet higher. The gates were kindly opened for the day by the courtesy of the Water Board of Salem. No high ground intervenes between this point and Salem to cut off a most picturesque and comprehensive view ofthe city, with a single exception probabl y the finest to be had. In its water front the highest point is near Powder House Hill on Mr. Peabody's pur chase, a point at which the proprietor has erected a com manding observatory of open trestle-work rising from a base one hundred and twenty-six feet above mean high tide, and rearing its highest outlook some fifty feet higher so there is little to intercept a sweeping view from Chip man Hill seaward or towards Salem, and the Beverly res ervoir on Brimble Hill, though higher, has no better view in these directions.
