This book gives an account of the proceedings of the International Astronomical Union Colloquium 115: High Resolution X-Ray Spectroscopy of Cosmic Plasmas. This was the first IAU meeting dedicated to high resolution X-ray spectroscopy of objects outside the solar system. A broad range of objects and astrophysical conditions are discussed. Results from the first generation of satellites with spectroscopic capability, i.e. the Einstein Observatory, EXOSAT, and Tenma, are reviewed from a perspective of a more precise interpretation allowed by improved theoretical models and plasma diagnostics. Laboratory and solar X-ray results that model or are relevant to conditions found in cosmic X-ray sources are also presented. The colloquium presents a forum for discussion of scientific objectives of new international missions in high resolution X-ray spectroscopy.

In the early years of the twentieth century, Victor Hess of Germany flew instruments in balloons and so discovered in 1912 that an extra-~errestial radiation of unknown origin is incident on the earth with an almost constant intensity at all times. These penetrating non solar radiations which were called Cosmic Rays by Millikan, USA, opened the new frontier of space physics and many leading scientists were attracted to it. At the end of World War II a number of space vehicles, e.g. stratospheric balloons, rockets and satellites were developed. In 1950 and onwards, these vehicles enabled spectacular advances in space physics and space astrophysics. New horizons were opened in the explorations of cosmic rays, the earth's magnetosphere, the Sun and the heliosphere, the moon and the planets. Using space-borne instruments, exciting discoveries were made of stars, and galaxies in the infra-red, ultra violet, x-ray and gamma-ray wavelengths. In this text book these fascinating new findings are presented in depth and on a level suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate students, research scientists and scientists of other disciplines. Although there are several excellent books and monographs on different aspects, most of these deal with specific areas. In this text book the findings of space physics and astrophysics are presented in an integrated manner with proper introductions to the fundamental aspects, and these are supplemented by relevant ground based observations.

The meeting was planned in collaboration with the members of the Scientific Organizing Committee, 10 whom I am grateful for suggesting a comprehensive and well balanced program. The SOC was comprised of Prof. J. Bleeker (Space Research Institute. Utrecht, The Netherlands), Dr. C. Cesarsky (CEN Saclay, France), Dr. R. Mushotzky (GSFC, USA), Prof. K. Pounds (University of Leicester, UK), Prof. H. Schnopper (Danish Space Research Laboratory, Denmark), Dr. H. Tananbaum (Center for Astrophysics, USA), Dr. G. Trinchieri (Arcetri Observatory, Italy), and Prof. 1. Truemper (MPE, Garching, Germany). The ASI, fully supported by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, was organized with the intent of providing a critical and up-to-date overview of our present kowledge and understanding of the properties of hot thin plasmas in astrophysics as they are revealed by X-ray observations from space. The X-ray and UV emission from optically thin thermal plasmas is a common feature of many astrophysical systems. This type of emission occurs in the solar corona and in the coronae of other stars, in supernova remnants and in the hot interstellar medium, in normal galaxies and galactic halos, and in the intergalactic gas in clusters.
