Book Description
It was during the 1940s in Arkansas when the very young Jim Good first learned from his fathers sermons that drinking Coke was a sin, but drinking Royal Crown was not. He also learned not to lie, to keep the Commandments, to love Jesus, and that God wanted segregation. By the age of twenty, he had moved thirty-one times and attended thirteen schools. In his compelling memoir, Good shares the heartfelt story of what it was like to grow up with a nomadic teacher father who borrowed Bibles and hymnbooks from churches so he could conduct services on the front porch. With the goal of seeking income and respect, Goods father moved the family more than once a yearfrom segregated Arkansas to integrated Washington and Oregon and back to segregated Arkansas, filling his sons life with continuous culture shock. As he embarked on the challenging path to adulthood, Good began to question everything about God, soon realizing that the only way to find the truth was to become a preacher himself. Borrowed Bibles is an engaging chronicle of one mans fascinating, faith-filled journey as he learns to accept life as an unsolvable mystery and discover his true purpose.

Book Description
We Borrowed Gentleness interrogates the innateness of pain and forms of destruction—through natural disaster, through God, through family, and through the power structures and patriarchal violence that embeds itself in language and cultural memory. Poems critique and challenge the patriarchal narratives that dominate American history. The poems leave the question open of whether man, men, a father and son, are redeemable after the surge of rising white nationalism in America. And yet, there are poems that find, still, bits of joy and perhaps a shred of hope. By juxtaposing poems of louder narrative imagination with quieter poems that explore intimate failings within a family, often portrayed with a realist aesthetic, the book attempts to work through the essential fault in man, in men—in the structures that they design and maintain.

Book Description
George Borrow's 'Letters to the British and Foreign Bible Society' is a remarkable collection of letters that chronicle his journey as an agent of the Bible Society. These letters, addressed to Rev. J. Jowett, offer a glimpse into the mind of an eccentric man who dedicated his life to mastering languages and translating religious texts. In one such letter, Borrow discusses his progress in learning the Tartar dialect and shares his thoughts on the translation of St. Matthew's Gospel into Mandchou. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in linguistics, religious studies, or the history of Bible translation.

Book Description
Ancient Palestine served as a land bridge between the continents of Asia, Africa, and Europe, and as a result, the ancient Israelites frequently interacted with speakers of non-Semitic languages, including Egyptian, Greek, Hittite and Luwian, Hurrian, Old Indic, and Old Iranian. This linguistic contact led the ancient Israelites to adopt non-Semitic words, many of which appear in the Hebrew Bible. Benjamin J. Noonan explores this process in Non-Semitic Loanwords in the Hebrew Bible, which presents a comprehensive, up-to-date, and linguistically informed analysis of the Hebrew Bible’s non-Semitic terminology. In this volume, Noonan identifies all the Hebrew Bible’s foreign loanwords and presents them in the form of an annotated lexicon. An appendix to the book analyzes words commonly proposed to be non-Semitic that are, in fact, Semitic, along with the reason for considering them as such. Noonan’s study enriches our understanding of the lexical semantics of the Hebrew Bible’s non-Semitic terminology, which leads to better translation and exegesis of the biblical text. It also enhances our linguistic understanding of the ancient world, in that the linguistic features it discusses provide significant insight into the phonology, orthography, and morphology of the languages of the ancient Near East. Finally, by tying together linguistic evidence with textual and archaeological data, this work extends our picture of ancient Israel’s interactions with non-Semitic peoples. A valuable resource for biblical scholars, historians, archaeologists, and others interested in linguistic and cultural contact between the ancient Israelites and non-Semitic peoples, this book provides significant insight into foreign contact in ancient Israel.
