Book Description
The BOREAS RSS-14 team collected and processed GOES-7 and -8 images of the BOREAS region as part of its effort to characterize the incoming, reflected, and emitted radiation at regional scales. This data set contains surface radiation parameters, such as net radiation and net solar radiation, that have been interpolated from GOES-7 images and AMS data onto the standard BOREAS mapping grid at a resolution of 5 km N-S and E-W. While some parameters are taken directly from the AMS data set, others have been corrected according to calibrations carried out during IFC-2 in 1994. The corrected values as well as the uncorrected values are included. For example, two values of net radiation are provided: an uncorrected value (Rn), and a value that has been corrected according to the calibrations (Rn-COR). The data are provided in binary image format data files. Some of the data files on the BOREAS CD-ROMs have been compressed using the Gzip program. See section 8.2 for details. The data files are available on a CD-ROM (see document number 20010000884), or from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC). Hall, Forrest G. (Editor) and Nickeson, Jaime (Editor) and Hodges, Gary and Smith, Eric A. Goddard Space Flight Center NASA/TM-2000-209891/VOL64, NAS 1.15:209891/VOL64, Rept-2000-03136-0/VOL64

Earth Observation of Wildland Fires in Mediterranean Ecosystems
Author: Emilio Chuvieco
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642017541
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 262
Book Description
Wildland fires are becoming one of the most critical environmental factors affecting a wide range of ecosystems worldwide. In Mediterranean ecosystems (including also South-Africa, California, parts of Chile and Australia), wildland fires are recurrent phenomena every summer, following the seasonal drought. As a result of changes in traditional land use practices, and the impact of recent climate warming, fires have more negative impacts in the last years, threatening lives, socio-economic and ecological values. The book describes the ecological context of fires in the Mediterranean ecosystems, and provides methods to observe fire danger conditions and fire impacts using Earth Observation and Geographic Information System technologies.

Wolf Creek Research Basin, Yukon
Author: Canada. Indian and Northern Affairs Canada
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Ecosystem management
Languages : en
Pages : 16
Book Description
The Wolf Creek Research Basin project was initiated in 1992 to provide a dedicated site to carry out applied research in the Yukon sub-Arctic. The project used an ecosystem approach through contaminants, waste, water, and environment/economy integration. This report describes the Wolf Creek area, the project's objectives, the background to the project's establishment, and research activities in 1992/93, 1993/94, and 1994/95. Research projects included watershed characterization, water quality monitoring, snow and vegetation survey, streamflow monitoring, snowpack monitoring, wind redistribution of snow, snow accumulation and depletion, snowmelt, evapotranspiration, and runoff modelling.

Clouds and Climate
Author: A. Pier Siebesma
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781107447738
Category : Clouds
Languages : en
Pages :
Book Description
"Clouds have always fascinated humans, but never has the need to understand them been so vital. As global surface temperature increases, human activities influence particulate matter in the atmosphere, and the properties of the land surface, clouds are expected to change, with manifold consequences for the climate. Clouds influence climate through their regulation of radiant energy transfer, through their role in convective energy transport, and in mediating the water cycle. Cloud research has never been so exciting. It is a topic with many new opportunities. New satellite observations from space with active instruments such as lidar and radar allow for the first time to reconstruct the three-dimensional distribution of clouds across Earth. Likewise, numerical simulations are beginning to globally resolve the three spatial dimensions of clouds as well as their dynamic evolution. This is enabling researchers, for the first time, to link the smallscale cloud processes and the basic laws that govern them to the general circulation of the atmosphere. These new types of observations, and simulation, are enabling researchers to distinguish how different cloud types influence the climate, and are guiding conceptual representations of their collective behaviour"--
