Book Description
Excerpt from Poor Lo!: Early Indian Missions; A Memorial The graves of Harriet Newell and Mrs. Judson are hal lowed as the shrines of the saints, and their memory made a watchword among Christians; yet the Western valley is full of green and nameless graves, where patient, long-enduring wives and mothers have lain down, worn out by the privations of as severe a missionary field, and no man knoweth their sepulchre. - harriet beecher stowe. Book Description
Excerpt from Lutheran Mission Work Among the American Indians These unpretentious pages are sent forth in the hope that the friends of missions may be in formed as to what the Lutheran Church has done and is doing in bringing the Gospel to the Red Man. The author has collected and put into convenient form the facts of this half-forgotten work, of which no complete treatment has ever appeared, but which is worthy of an adequate presentation. As natural in a book of this kind, his indebtedness to others is large. This refers especially to chapters Ill and IV. In other parts the author has not hesitated now and then to adapt or to take over an adequate rendering. The Bibliographical Notes at the end of the book will give a more detailed account of the sources. However, every effort has been made to verify facts and statements, and to render the account as clear as possible. For the work being done at present the missionaries themselves have been constant and will ing helpers. Sincere thanks are due them for their ungrudging co-operation. The manuscript dealing with their particular mission was submitted to them, tho the author alone must be held responsible for mistakes and shortcomings that may occur. Book Description
Excerpt from Mission Work Among the Negroes and the Indians: What Is Being Accomplished by Means of the Annual Collection Taken Up for Our Missions No less urgent is our duty to the poor Red Man. It 15 sad 'dening to know that out of a total population of 27 0 000 Indians 1111 our country, more than 100, 000 are stillxlieatl1ens. It need not be so. The Indian can be led to love the Catholic Religion. To him the Black Robe comes as a messenger from heaven; he listens, we may say, to no other; the one bright page in his history is his improvement the influence of the Catholic priest; while there IS nothing so noble m the annals of America as the long story of the heroism of our missionaries among the Indians. Today, as in the past, we have many brave, apostolic men preaching the Gospel to them, while our sisters, no less zealously, devote their liv 135 to the training of the little ones. It Is a pamful, laborious life for priest and 111111; but perseverance and self denial Win their reward and today more than one-third of our Indian population is Catholic Yet the support of all these most useful schools and missions is maintained only with difficulty; and for lack of funds new schools and 1111s's1ons, just as urgently needed, cannot be created. More organized efforts are now being made, and much good may be hoped for from the Marquette League and the Society for the Preservation of the Faith among Indian Children, both of which we heartily endorse and recommend.
