Book Description
Between 1973 and 2016, the ways to manipulate DNA to endow new characteristics in an organism (that is, biotechnology) have advanced, enabling the development of products that were not previously possible. What will the likely future products of biotechnology be over the next 5â€"10 years? What scientific capabilities, tools, and/or expertise may be needed by the regulatory agencies to ensure they make efficient and sound evaluations of the likely future products of biotechnology? Preparing for Future Products of Biotechnology analyzes the future landscape of biotechnology products and seeks to inform forthcoming policy making. This report identifies potential new risks and frameworks for risk assessment and areas in which the risks or lack of risks relating to the products of biotechnology are well understood.

Book Description
In July 2005, the National Academies released the report Biological Science and Biotechnology in Russia: Controlling Diseases and Enhancing Security. The report offered a number of recommendations that could help restore Russia's ability to join with the United States and the broader international community in leading an expanded global effort to control infectious diseases. A proposed bilateral intergovernmental commission could play a pivotal role toward that end as cooperation moves from assistance to partnership. The report proposed the establishment of two model State Sanitary Epidemiological Surveillance Centers in Russia, more focused support of competitively selected Russian research groups as centers of excellence, the promotion of investments in biotechnology niches that are well suited for Russian companies, and expanded opportunities for young scientists to achieve scientific leadership positions in Russia. Also, the report highlighted the importance of U.S. programs that support the integration of former Soviet defense scientists with civilian researchers who had not been involved in military-related activities.

Book Description
Biotechnology represents a diversity of scientific techniques and potential products. It range from technically complex, often expensive, molecular-level techniques, typified by recombinant DNA, to far more routine cheaper techniques such as cell and tissue culture. These biotechnology systems is being applied in a wide spectrum of production sectors ranging from agriculture, food, energy and forestry to chemicals, pharmaceuticals, mining and environmental control. This monograph outlines the level of biotechnology development and applications in the developing world and demonstrates its economic impact. In addition, it provides science policy-makers with a very well-defined and forward-looking strategy to promote biotechnology research for economic development. Furthermore, it highlights a general action plan. Contents Chapter 1: Biotechnology Development in the Third World; Chapter 2: Biotechnology: Economic Impact; Chapter 3: Economic Development via Biotechnology; Chapter 4: General Conclusions and Action Plan.

Book Description
between the diversity of plant and animal species and host/dependent agricultural systems. Biodiversity in Agroecosystems shows how biodiversity can be thought of not only as the rich make-up of a great number of related and competing species within an ecologically defined community, but also as the robust behavior and resilience of those species over time and as the endurance of their eco-community. This book brings to the fore new research on biodiversity in agricultural ecosystems at both micro and macro levels, heretofore available only in journals and proceedings papers.
