Book Description
Doug Miller-a lifetime drug-free bodybuilder-won the 2009 world championship of the International Federation of Physique Athletes. He also graduated first in his class from Penn State with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. Doug used his knowledge of biology and biochemistry to build a world-class physique and now he's sharing his secrets for the first time. In this book, Doug teamed up with a professional writer and a professor at Johns Hopkins Medical School to explain the key scientific concepts to help you:* Choose the right foods to drop fat and gain muscle* Create a safe, effective exercise program that works for you* Bring new levels of focus and intensity to your workouts* Regulate post-workout recovery to maximize progress* Maintain a healthy hormonal system for optimal health* Create a potent mind-muscle connection to become leaner and strongerNot a bodybuilder? No Problem! All the science in this book is about basic human biology. Young, old, tall, short, muscular, flabby... whatever! All humans are the same at the cellular level. From the Preface...Most people who work out understand, in a vague way, that weight training causes tiny tears in the muscle fibers which the body repairs by sending in energy (in the form of sugar) and spare parts (in the form of protein) making the fibers slightly stronger and bigger. Building muscle involves repeating this process many times as efficiently as possible. So far, so good. Beyond this point, however, the details start to get a little hazy-even for people who've been hitting the gym for a long time. What I wanted to do in this book is share my approach to dieting and training, and explain some of the methods and lifestyle habits I used to become a successful natural bodybuilder (including a few interesting anecdotes). But I also wanted to explain in clear language how the biochemical and biomechanical processes of building muscle actually work; how they can be made more efficient by properly regulating your nutritional needs and recovery; and by choosing the right nutritional supplements to maximize your fitness goals and control body fat. That is a lot of ground to cover, so in addition to Glenn's help with the writing, I'm also grateful for the invaluable assistance of my other co-author, Dr. Kevin Fontaine. Dr. Fontaine is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. He has a longstanding interest in using resistance exercise to improve health and wellbeing. This book would not have possible without him; and he even helped restructure the theme and tone of the book-making it a lot more readable. Plus, his experience, training, and extensive research background really helped to give this project a solid scientific foundation. Despite the title, this book is not only for bodybuilders, certainly not only for competitive bodybuilders. More and more people are weight training these days, whether for a sport, overall health, or just to look better. And everyone in America seems to be on a diet. The information presented here is intended to be useful for anyone seeking to builder a stronger, more attractive physique.

Book Description
A Fareed Zakaria GPS Book of the Week: “An exhilarating look at the cutting edge of bioengineering. . . . a mind-bending read.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) For millennia, humans have tried—and often failed—to master nature and transcend our limits. But this has started to change. The new scientific frontier is the human body: The greatest engineers of our generation have turned their sights inward, and their work is beginning to revolutionize mankind. In The Body Builders, Adam Piore takes us on a fascinating journey into the field of bioengineering—which can be used to reverse engineer, rebuild, and augment human beings—and paints a vivid portrait of the people at its center. Chronicling the ways new technology has retooled our physical expectations and mental processes, Piore visits people who have regrown parts of their fingers and legs in the wake of terrible traumas; tries on a muscle suit that allows him to lift ninety pounds with his fingertips; dips into the race to create “Viagra for the brain”; and shadows the doctors trying to give mute patients the ability to communicate telepathically. As science continues to lay bare the mysteries of human performance, it is helping us to see—and exist—above our expectations. The Body Builders goes beyond the headlines and the hype to reveal the inner workings and the outer reaches of our bodies and minds, and explore how new developments are changing, and will forever change, what is possible for humankind. Weaving powerful storytelling with groundbreaking science, The Body Builders explores the current revolution in human augmentation, which is helping us triumph over the limitations and constraints we’ve long accepted as an inevitable part of being human. “Piore writes gracefully, and with deep insight, about complex scientific endeavors that could ease human suffering but are fraught with myriad ethical perils.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Description
The author of The Warrior Diet shares his revolutionary approach to physical transformation, offering practical guidance on how to build and maintain a leaner, stronger, and healthier body Diet and fitness books appear at a dizzying rate—and with a wealth of dubious claims—in a culture facing increasing health problems based on a sedentary lifestyle. Ori Hofmekler’s Maximum Muscle, Minimum Fat pulls out of the pack by focusing on the biological principles that dictate muscle gain and fat loss. Written for the widest readership—competitive athletes, bodybuilders, trainers, martial artists, sports nutritionists and coaches, dieters, and anyone concerned about their health—the book builds on the concepts popularized in The Warrior Diet. In simple lay terms, Hofmekler how under-eating and fasting can trigger an anabolic switch that stimulates growth and rejuvenation; how to re-engineer the body at the cellular level to burn fat and build muscles; and how to naturally manipulate the body’s hormones for rapid muscle fusion and faster fat breakdown. He offers smart strategies for: • Taking advantage of hunger to stimulate growth, burn fat, and boost brain power • Turning insulin into a muscle builder instead of a fat gainer • Shattering training and diet plateaus • Improve metabolic function, performance, and your capacity to gain and sustain prime health Challenging most common diet and fitness concepts, Maximum Muscle, Minimum Fat provides a revolutionary way of looking at human performance, shedding new light on how the muscle and fat tissues operate and offering practical information on how to achieve optimal physical health.
