Book Description
The discovery in 1922 of the exceptional effectiveness of tetraethyllead in suppressing knock in the combustion of gasoline in engines and its introduction as a gasoline additive in 1923 stimulated an enormous number of studies on procedures for its synthesis and industrial production, on its behavior and uses, and also on the toxicology of this compound and on its environmental impact resulting from large scale lead distribution. The results of these investigations are collected in more than 3000 papers and patents. The quantity of information on this prominent compound fills the second volume of the series on organo lead compounds. Complete literature coverage was strived for but not all of the voluminous patent data have been considered. Certain publications on production of tetraethyllead or on use as a gasoline additive that are not reported in Chemical Abstracts (C.A.) may not have been found; similarly, publications that could not be clearly identified as relevant to the subject might be missing. Publications concerning the fate of inorganic lead compounds that are products of the combustion of leaded gasoline as weil as the vast amount of related papers on analytical and toxicological studies and on health and environmental aspects have been deliberately omitted. The literature is covered through 1988; C.A. has been evaluated through volume 110 of 1989.

Book Description
Organotins are widespread contaminants especially of water environments. Their chemically versatile structure makes organotin compounds able to bind to a variety of biomolecules thus widely affecting biological functions. Trisubstituted molecules, namely tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT), have been widely employed in antifouling paints and are also exploited as plastic stabilizers that unfortunately cause harmful biological effects. Persistent bioaccumulation has resulted in organotins becoming a significant environmental threat. Chapter by chapter, the biological and biochemical effec.

Book Description
Following the collection of a sample, every analytical chemist will agree that its subsequent preservation and processing are of paramount importance. The availability of high performance analytical instrumentation has not diminished this need for careful selection of appropriate pretreatment methodologies, intelligently designed to synergistically elicit optimum function from these powerful measurement tools. Sample Preparation for Trace Element Analysis is a modern, comprehensive treatise, providing an account of the state-of-the art on the subject matter. The book has been conceived and designed to satisfy the varied needs of the practicing analytical chemist. It is a multi-author work, reflecting the diverse expertise arising from its highly qualified contributors. The first five chapters deal with general issues related to the determination of trace metals in varied matrices, such as sampling, contamination control, reference materials, calibration and detection techniques. The second part of the book deals with extraction and sampling technologies (totaling 15 chapters), providing theoretical and practical hints for the users on how to perform specific extractions. Subsequent chapters overview seven major representative matrices and the sample preparation involved in their characterization. This portion of the book is heavily based on the preceding chapters dealing with extraction technologies. The last ten chapters are dedicated to sample preparation for trace element speciation. - First title to provide comprehensive sample preparation information, dealing specifically with the analysis of samples for trace elements. - The 39 chapters are authored by international leaders of their fields.
