Book Description
Symposium C, Bio-Inspired Nanoscale Hybrid Systems, provided an extensive overview of the new and advanced approach to synthesize functional materials and to fabricate nanoscale devices utilizing biomolecules as a key building block. Nature utilizes molecular recognition between complex biomacromolecules to form sophisticated meso- and macroscopic architectures with tremendous control over the placement and orientation of nanoscopic building blocks. On the other hand, the advances of nanotechnology provide us new nanoscale structures including nanoparticles, nanowires, nanofabricated circuits etc. The marriage between biomolecules and these new nanostructructures allows us to envision many scientific breakthroughs and commercial applications. For example, specific interactions between biomolecules can be utilized as a major driving force to build sophisticated 1D, 2D and 3D architectures. C.A. Mirkin (Northwestern Univ.) demonstrated "biodirected synthesis of functional materials using nanoscale building blocks" where biomolecular interactions such as DNA hybridization is utilized to direct the assembly of nanoparticles to form desired architectures. Several researchers reported various bio-inspired synthesis and assembly results such as the synthesis of metallic nanowires from peptides, DNA-mediated assembly of carbon nanotubes, and 3D assembly of nanoparticles using virus as a template.

Book Description
The goal of this research is to develop nano and meso-structured hybrid systems for the application in light harvesting, charge transfer and photocurrent generation with a high impact on the mission of the US Air Force. Our project is multifaceted and includes both bioinspiration and physical sciences approaches, all at the molecular and nanoscale levels. Our particular approach is creating nanohybrids of functional molecules coupled with nanostructured inorganics. One of the ways of achieving this complex but potentially highly functional system is combining biomacromolecular entities with functional inorganics and synthetic molecules.

Book Description
Intelligent materials are emerging composite functional materials that have boomed since the 1990s. The intelligent material system, involving a multitude of structures and functions, combines studies that explore nature, mimic nature and surpass nature. It also provides novel ideas, new theories, and cutting-edge methodologies for the innovation of science and technology. Thus, mimicking the micro/nanostructures and functions found in nature will build a bridge between biology and technology, which may provide inspirations for solving today's technological problems. This book gives a complementary introduction about natural and artificial micro/nanoscale interfacial materials, devoting largely to the intelligent materials with special wettabilities. Inspired by nature, the authors proposed a concept of "binary cooperative complementary micro/nanoscale interfacial materials". Based on this design concept, the contact and coupling of heterogeneous materials will result in novel properties on the surface or interface of materials, which may create new functional materials and devices. This book combines popular science and professional knowledge, which will be suitable for not only researchers but also science lovers.
