Book Description
Excerpt from Sketches of North Carolina I have the usual to offer for the publication of this little volume. It will sufficiently appear, by both the matter and the style, that it was not originally intended to assume this shape. When my friend Mr. Hope first solicited me to write something for his journal, I consented only on condition that he would accept such papers as I might be able to prepare in the midst of the wearisome and unending duties which devolve upon a country lawyer. He was pleased to say that he preferred such spontaneous productions to more studied and elaborate essays, as being better adapted to the columns of a daily newspaper. Thus encouraged I began the task, selecting, naturally and almost instinctively, North Carolina as my theme. The sketches were written under most unfavorable circumstances; many were penciled off at night after a fatiguing day of labor in the court-house, and others whilst on the circuit, without books of reference, and sent immediately off to the editor. My professional brethren, at least, will appreciate the tread-mill existence from which they sprang. After a few numbers were published, Mr. Hope surprised me very much by copyrighting the series, and informing me of his wish to publish in book form. To this I yielded reluctantly. I was conscious of their defects, of their careless manner of preparation, of their scattered and disconnected order; and yet worse, I did not have leisure to rewrite, correct, or add to them. Still I yielded to Mr. Hopes wish, and although the success of the enterprise is of course entirely problematical, I do not, and shall not regret the attempt. Book Description
It is impossible to understand America without understanding the history of African Americans. In nearly seven hundred entries, the Encyclopedia of African American History, 1619-1895 documents the full range of the African American experience during that period - from the arrival of the first slave ship to the death of Frederick Douglass - and shows how all aspects of American culture, history, and national identity have been profoundly influenced by the experience of African Americans. The Encyclopedia covers an extraordinary range of subjects. Major topics such as "Abolitionism," "Black Nationalism," the "Civil War," the "Dred Scott case," "Reconstruction," "Slave Rebellions and Insurrections," the "Underground Railroad," and "Voting Rights" are given the in-depth treatment one would expect. But the encyclopedia also contains hundreds of fascinating entries on less obvious subjects, such as the "African Grove Theatre," "Black Seafarers," "Buffalo Soldiers," the "Catholic Church and African Americans," "Cemeteries and Burials," "Gender," "Midwifery," "New York African Free Schools," "Oratory and Verbal Arts," "Religion and Slavery," the "Secret Six," and much more. In addition, the Encyclopedia offers brief biographies of important African Americans - as well as white Americans who have played a significant role in African American history - from Crispus Attucks, John Brown, and Henry Ward Beecher to Olaudah Equiano, Frederick Douglass, Sarah Grimke, Sojourner Truth, Nat Turner, Phillis Wheatley, and many others. All of the Encyclopedia's alphabetically arranged entries are accessibly written and free of jargon and technical terms. To facilitate ease of use, many composite entries gather similar topics under one headword. The entry for Slave Narratives, for example, includes three subentries: The Slave Narrative in America from the Colonial Period to the Civil War, Interpreting Slave Narratives, and African and British Slave Narratives. A headnote detailing the various subentries introduces each composite entry. Selective bibliographies and cross-references appear at the end of each article to direct readers to related articles within the Encyclopedia and to primary sources and scholarly works beyond it. A topical outline, chronology of major events, nearly 300 black and white illustrations, and comprehensive index further enhance the work's usefulness.

Book Description
Politics in Rutherford County were heated a century ago: the developing textile industry, the growing population, an agricultural crisis and race relations inflamed everyone. Mills Higgins Flack, a leader of the Farmers' Alliance and the county's first Populist in the state House, was allegedly murdered on August 28, 1900, by Avery Mills, an African American. This book documents the murder and the lynching of Avery Mills. The author (Flack's great-great-grandson) considers the phenomena of racial lynching, the Populist movement in the county, the white supremacy movement of the state's Democratic party and the county's KKK activities.

Book Description
Excerpt from Leonard Henderson: Address of Judge Robert W. Winston Presenting the Portrait of Chief Justice Henderson to the Supreme Court of North Carolina Keeling, from which marriage sprang the jurist, Leonard Henderson. A man's education begins, they say, hun dreds of years before he is born, and hence it is not difficult to trace to their source certain characteristics of the Chief Justice - his originality, his independence, his rugged per sonality. How could he have been otherwise? Samuel Henderson, the grandfather, strong and rugged, had exe cuted his writs, subpoenas, and other processes, a-foot through the forest primeval, traversing a territory from Virginia on the North to Johnston on the South, and from the mountains on the west to Northampton on the east. The father, Richard Henderson, holding the minor office of constable, and fired by a noble ambition, determined to enter the profession of the law. He accordingly read such books as were to be had, and after a short time presented himself for examination to the Chief Justice of the Gen eral Court, upon whose certificate of proficiency the Gov ernor would issue a license to practice law. When this stripling of the law made known to the examiner that he had scarce been sorrowing at the feet of Coke and Littleton twenty months, not to mention twenty years, he was rudely advised to go home and not undertake to stand for his license, to which our undaunted young disciple of Themis stated with promptness and spirit, that he had come not to ask advice or seek a favor, but to demand a right. It is needless to add that the license was worthily won, in the teeth of the most rigid examination. Subsequently, Col onel Richard Henderson attained the highest honor of the profession under the Royal Government, and after the War of the Revolution and the adoption of the Constitu tion of the United States, he was elected one of the first three Justices of the Supreme Court of North Carolina. This ofice he shortly resigned, or refused to accept, the reason' being that he had more ambitious schemes afoot. He had undertaken to establish a new colony in the west.
