Book Description
Excerpt from Biographia Literaria, Vol. 2 Occasion of the Lyrical Ballads, and the objects originally proposed - Preface to the second edition - The ensuing controversy, its causes and acrimony - Philosophic definitions of a poem and poetry with scholia. During the first year that Mr. Wordsworth and I were neighbours, our conversations turned frequently on the two I cardinal points of poetry, the power of exciting the sympathy of the reader by a faithful adherence to the truth of nature, and the power of giving the interest of novelty by the modifying colors of imagination. The sudden charm, which accidents of light and shade, which moon-light or sun-set diffused over a known and familiar landscape, appeared to represent the practicability of combining both. These are the poetry of nature. The thought suggested itself (to which of us I do not recollect) that a series of poems might be composed of two sorts. In the one, the incidents and agents were to be, in part at least, supernatural; and the excellence aimed at was to consist in the interesting of the affections by the dramatic truth of such emotions, as would naturally accompany such situations, supposing them real. And real in this sense they have been to every human being who, from whatever source of delusion, has at any time believed himself under supernatural agency. For the second class, subjects were to be chosen from ordinary life; the characters and incidents were to be such, as will be found in every village and its vicinity, where there is a meditative and feeling mind to seek after them, or to notice them, when they present themselves. Book Description
Excerpt from Biographia Literaria, or Biographical Sketches of My Literary Life and Opinions, Vol. 2 of 2 Agreeing as I do with these remarks in the main, I venture to observe that in my mind they ascribe too much influence upon the early fate of Mr. W.'s poems to the E. Review. That those poems were not generally admired from the first, was, in my Opinion, their own fault, that is to say, arose principally from their being works of great genius, and consequently, though old as the world itself, in one way, yet in another, a new thing under the sun. Novelty is delightful when it is understood at once, when it is but the old familiar matters newly set forth; but here was a new world presented to the reader which was also a strange world, and most of those who had grown to middle age acquainted with the old world only, and chiefly with that part of it which was least like Wordsworth's - the hither part, out Of sight of Chaucer and Spenser and the old English Poets in general, could never learn their way, or find themselves at home there. Book Description
Excerpt from Biographia Epistolaris, Vol. 2: Being the Biographical Supplement of Coleridge's Biographia Literaria; With Additional Letters, Etc On 16th April he was off Oporto, and wrote a description of the place, as seen from the sea, for Southey (letters, The Speedwell was convoyed by the Leviathan, man of-war of 74 guns. Lisbon and the rest of the Portuguese coast are described by Coleridge, and on 19th April the Speedwell reached Gibraltar, where Coleridge landed and scrambled on the rocks among the monkeys, our poor relations. In his note-books he describes more fully the scene around the Rock of Gibraltar with its multitude and discordant complexity Of associations - the Pillars of Hercules, Calpe, and Abyla, the realms of Masinissa, Jugurtha, and Syphax; Spain, Gibraltar, the Dey of Algiers, dusky moo1, and black African. At its feet mighty ram parts establishing themselves in the sea, with their huge artillery, hollow trunks Of iron where Death and Thunder sleep, and the abiding things of Nature, great, calm, majestic, and one! Book Description
Excerpt from Biographia Literaria Motives to the present work - Rece tion of the Author's first publication - Discipline of his taste at schoo - Efi'ect of contemporary writers on youthful minds - Bowles's Sonnets - Comparison between the poets before and since Pope. IT has been my lot to have had my name introduced both in conversation, and in print, more frequently than I find it easy to explain, whether I consider the fewness, unim portance, and limited circulation of my writings, or the retirement and distance, in which I have lived, both from the literary and political world. Most often it has been connected with some charge which I could not acknowledge, or some principle which I had never entertained. Neverthe less, had I had no other motive or incitement, the reader would not have been troubled with this exculpation. What my additional purposes were, will be seen in the following pages. It will be found, that the least of what I have written concerns myself personally. I have used the narra tion chie y for the purpose of giving a continuity to the work, in part for the sake of the miscellaneous re ections suggested to me by particular events, but still more as in troductory to a statement of my principles in Politics, Religion, and Philosophy, and an application of the rules, deduced from philosophical principles, to poetry and eriti cism. But of the objects, which I proposed to myself, it was not the least important to effect, as far as possible, a settlement of the long continued controversy concerning the true nature of poetic diction; and at the same time to define with the utmost impartiality the real poetic character of the poet, by whose writings this controversy was first kindled, and has been since fuelled and fanned. Book Description
Excerpt from Biographia Literaria, or Biographical Sketches of My Literary Life and Opinions, Vol. 1: Part II From a hundred possible confutations let one suflice. According to this system the idea or vibration a from the external object A becomes associable with the idea or vibration m from the external object M, because the oscillation a propagated itself so as to reproduce the oscillation m. But the original impression from M was essentially different from the impression A unless therefore different causes may produce the same effect, the vibration a could never produce the vibra tion m: and this therefore could never be the means, by which a and m are associated.' To understand this, the attentive reader need only be reminded, that the ideas are themselves, in Hartley's system, nothing more than their appropriate configurative vibrations. It is a mere delusion of the fancy to conceive the pre existence of the ideas, in any chain of association, as so many differently coloured billiard-balls in contabt, so that when an object, the billiard-stick, strikes the first or white ball, the same motion propagates itself through the red, green, blue and black, and sets the whole in motion. N 0! We must suppose the very same force, which constitutes the white ball, to consti tute the red or black; or the idea of a circle to consti tute the idea of a triangle; which is impossible. Book Description
Excerpt from Biographia Literaria, Vol. 1 Another reason is, perhaps, to be found in the frag mentary nature of his aesthetic. This, again, is a defect which attaches to all Coleridge's speculations. But it must be remembered that the very qualities in his genius, to which his writings owe their vitality, were antagonistic to complete and systematic exposition. Coleridge was essentially a teacher, and conscious of a message to his age and his examination of principles was rarely directed bya purely speculative interest. The search for a criterion of poetry involved him in the wider search for a crite rion of life. His theory of the imagination, upon which his whole art-philosophy hinges, was primarily the vindi cation of {particular attitude to life and reality. This width of vision was fatal to his success as a specialist but while it vastly increases the general interest of his views, it by no means lessens their value for the artist and the critic.
