Methods of Bifurcation Theory
Author: S.-N. Chow
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461381592
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 529
Book Description
An alternative title for this book would perhaps be Nonlinear Analysis, Bifurcation Theory and Differential Equations. Our primary objective is to discuss those aspects of bifurcation theory which are particularly meaningful to differential equations. To accomplish this objective and to make the book accessible to a wider we have presented in detail much of the relevant background audience, material from nonlinear functional analysis and the qualitative theory of differential equations. Since there is no good reference for some of the mate rial, its inclusion seemed necessary. Two distinct aspects of bifurcation theory are discussed-static and dynamic. Static bifurcation theory is concerned with the changes that occur in the structure of the set of zeros of a function as parameters in the function are varied. If the function is a gradient, then variational techniques play an important role and can be employed effectively even for global problems. If the function is not a gradient or if more detailed information is desired, the general theory is usually local. At the same time, the theory is constructive and valid when several independent parameters appear in the function. In differential equations, the equilibrium solutions are the zeros of the vector field. Therefore, methods in static bifurcation theory are directly applicable.

Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems
Author: Robert A. Meyers
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461418054
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 1885
Book Description
Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an authoritative reference to the basic tools and concepts of complexity, systems theory, and dynamical systems from the perspective of pure and applied mathematics. Complex systems are systems that comprise many interacting parts with the ability to generate a new quality of collective behavior through self-organization, e.g. the spontaneous formation of temporal, spatial or functional structures. These systems are often characterized by extreme sensitivity to initial conditions as well as emergent behavior that are not readily predictable or even completely deterministic. The more than 100 entries in this wide-ranging, single source work provide a comprehensive explication of the theory and applications of mathematical complexity, covering ergodic theory, fractals and multifractals, dynamical systems, perturbation theory, solitons, systems and control theory, and related topics. Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an essential reference for all those interested in mathematical complexity, from undergraduate and graduate students up through professional researchers.

Conservative Systems and Quantum Chaos
Author: Larry Meredith Bates
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821802542
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 189
Book Description
This volume presents new research in classical Hamiltonian and quantum systems from the Workshop on Conservative Systems and Quantum Chaos held during The Fields Institute Program Year on Dynamical Systems and Bifurcation Theory in October 1992 (Waterloo, Canada). The workshop was organized so that there were presentations that formed a bridge between classical and quantum mechanical systems. Four of these papers appear in this collection, with the remaining six papers concentrating on classical Hamiltonian dynamics.

Local and Semi-Local Bifurcations in Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems
Author: Heinz Hanßmann
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540388966
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 248
Book Description
This book demonstrates that while elliptic and hyperbolic tori determine the distribution of maximal invariant tori, they themselves form n-parameter families. Therefore, torus bifurcations of high co-dimension may be found in a single given Hamiltonian system, absent untypical conditions or external parameters. The text moves logically from the integrable case, in which symmetries allow for reduction to bifurcating equilibria, to non-integrability, where smooth parametrisations must be replaced by Cantor sets.
