Book Description
Excerpt from Annual Report of the Public Schools of Wilkes County, 1905-1906 The Teachers' Association held four meetings during the year. These were better attended by the teachers than those of any pre vions year, and more interest was manifest. We have adopted the plan of designating certain teachers to prepare talks and essays on the subjects for discussion and find that this is an improvement on the former plan as the teachers selected for the work give more tlme and attention to preparing themselves for the discussions, hence making them more interesting and profitable to the members of the Association. After the regular discussion has closed any member who desires to do so is allowed to speak. Another new feature is the lectures and addresses which have been made to the body by members of the pulpit and the bar. We feel that these talks have done much good in inciting the teachers to renewed efforts and impressing more forcibly upon them their great duties and responsibilities. Book Description
From nineteenth-century public baths to today's private backyard havens, swimming pools have long been a provocative symbol of American life. In this social and cultural history of swimming pools in the United States, Jeff Wiltse relates how, over the years, pools have served as asylums for the urban poor, leisure resorts for the masses, and private clubs for middle-class suburbanites. As sites of race riots, shrinking swimsuits, and conspicuous leisure, swimming pools reflect many of the tensions and transformations that have given rise to modern America.

Book Description
A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
