Book Description
To celebrate Anthony Reid's numerous and seminal contributions to the field of Southeast Asian history, a group of his colleagues and students has contributed essays for this Festschrift. In addition to introductory essays which provide personal and intellectual histories of Anthony Reid the man, there is a range of original scholarly contributions addressing historical issues which Reid has researched during his career. Divided into sections which examine Southeast Asia in the world, early modern Southeast Asia, and modern Southeast Asia, these works engage with issues ranging from the Age of Commerce and comparative Eurasian history, to nationalism, ethnic hybridity, Islam, technological change, and the Chinese and Arabs in Southeast Asia. The authors include some of the foremost historians of Southeast Asia in our generation.

Book Description
Annotation Southeast Asian scholars may have special insights into their respective countries, but they are just as easily infected by political and didactic functions of their national histories as any historian. The editors (a professor and former professor with the School of Humanities, U. Sains Malaysia) present 15 papers in which Southeast Asian scholars turn a critical eye on their national historiographies. Five of the papers explore broad methodological issues, while others examine particular historiographic traditions from Burma (Myanmar), Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. The final group consists of case studies of the application of new methodologies and understandings to particular historical events or periods. Book Description
Many students of the Burmese economy have encountered difficulties in finding the necessary materials as statistical data on the economic history of Burma are limited and scarce. The main aim of this volume is to provide easier access for scholars who wish to monitor the economic development of Burma over the last two centuries. Much of the data are taken from J. S. Furnivall's laborious work, A Study of the Social and Economic History of Burma, which has never been published in an accessible form. To visualize the changes over a century, most of the tables have been converted into graphs. This volume will be useful for those in and out of the country who want to understand the economic progress of Burma.

"...DESERVES A PLACE IN REFERENCE COLLECTIONS."--CHOICE. "..IT ENABLES SPECIALISTS OF ONE COUNTRY OR SUBJECT TO IDENTIFY RAPIDLY REFERENCE SOURCES ON COUNTRIES & SUBJECT AREAS WITHIN THE REGION WITH WHICH THEY MAY BE LESS FAMILIAR...IT WILL FACILITATE THE TASK OF COMPARATIVE RESEARCH WHILE HARD-PRESSED REFERENCE LIBRARIANS WILL NO DOUBT FIND IT AN INVALUABLE SOURCE OF FIRST RESORT."--ROYAL ASIATIC SOCIETY, VOLUME 4. This guide evaluates the widely scattered fund of material available in South-East Asia in such areas as politics, religion, society, history language, geography, economics & development. Even the simple listings of reference sources within this guide bring to light much indispensable & fascinating information; information that risks being over-looked because of its date or origin, or that is inaccessible in libraries because of cataloging problems. This guide analyses the contents of books & non-reference materials from the practical viewpoint of today's library. (REGIONAL REFERENCE GUIDES, 2)
