Book Description
Close to the turn of the century and almost 45 years after Independence, India opened its doors to free-market liberalization. Although meant as the promise to a better economic tomorrow, three decades later, many feel betrayed by the economic changes ushered in by this new financial era. Here is a book that probes whether India’s economic reforms have aided the development of Indian Muslims who have historically been denied the fruits of economic development. Maidul Islam points out that in current political discourse, the ‘Muslim question’ in India is not articulated in terms of demands for equity. Instead, the political leadership camouflages real issues of backwardness, prejudice, and social exclusion with the rhetoric of identity and security. Historically informed, empirically grounded, and with robust analytical rigour, the book tries to explore connections between multiple forms of Muslim marginalization, the socio-economic realities facing the community, and the formation of modern Muslim identity in the country. At a time when post-liberalization economic policies have created economic inequality and joblessness for significant sections of the population including Muslims, the book proposes working towards a radical democratic deepening in India.

Book Description
La 4e de couverture indique : "India is credited with having one of the finest democratic constitutions in the world. And rightly so. Gopalan and Maneka are highlighted. The distinction between pre-Maneka and post-Maneka jurisprudence is also clearly brought out. Besides, there is an elaborate discussion on the right to information, special problems regarding media freedom, and the Law of Contempt of Court which, the author feels, needs amendment. This well-balanced and well-researched book is intended as a text for postgraduate students of law (LL.M.) and as a reference for undergraduate students of law (LL.B., BA LL.B.). It should also serve as a valuable reference to lawyers, judges, and the teaching community. Book Description
Excerpt from The Swatantra Party and Indian Conservatism Under these circumstances, it may only be an embarrassment to those whose help is appreciated to have their names mentioned here. Still, I should like to express my deepest gratitude to Professors Lloyd and Susanne Rudolph (now of the University of Chicago) and to Dr Barrington Moore, Ir., who painstakingly and affectionately - but with often distressingly honest criticism directed the Harvard University dissertation upon which this bookis based; and these same people have been involved subsequently in its wholesale revision. Thanks are due also to Professor Myron Weiner, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who read the manuscript in toto and who rendered valuable criticism as well as encouragement and who generously made available some pertinent manuscript material of his own; and to my Dartrnouth colleagues, Professors Henry Ehrmann, Kalman Silvert, and Vincent Star zinger, who have given valuable aid and encouragement at various important junctures. Debts of gratitude are also due to Harvard University and the Fulbright Foundation for jointly sponsoring a year of research in India in 1962-35 to Professor R. Bhaskaran of the University of Madras, who was of much help during that year; to the Comparative Studies Center, Dartmouth College, for sup port of research time in 1964 - 5 and for supplementing a grant from the American Institute of Indian Studies, to make possible a second tripfto India in 1966 - 7, when much up-dating was under taken. Book Description
Why are so many adult children living still living with mum and dad? Why do young people seem so disinterested in politics? And what are the hidden threats to Britain’s long-term prosperity lurking in the next few decades? First published in 2010, Ed Howker and Shiv Mailk’s Jilted Generation answers fundamental questions about the society you thought you knew. It identified, for the first time, the perilous position of Britain’s young adults and, with a title brandished by everyone from Ed Miliband to student protesters, the book’s thesis has formed a controversial but essential part of Britain’s political debate. With significant additional material, this edition updates the argument and explains the real effects of austerity policies and the recession. And, crucially, it explains what must be done to protect a vital and underestimated national asset – Britain’s newest adults.
