This work brings together, in a condensed format, a broad selection of over 2,300 prominent Americans whose ancestors were of German-speaking origin. For the benefit of the reader, each of these distinguished citizens has been categorized according to his or her contributions and placed into thirteen user-friendly directories, namely: Artistic Talents; Sporting Personalities and Brewers; Clergy; Educators, Scholars and Historians; Engineers, Inventors, Bridge-Builders and Tinkerers; Entertainment World; High Finance and Big Business; Government; Medical Sciences; World of Music; Printing and Publishing World; Natural Sciences; and, Men and Women at War. A typical entry includes, when available, the full name, birth and death dates, and which generation of the family in America that individual represented. Oftentimes the entries will include the stage-name or the original spelling of the surname if the name had been changed in America. Each table is preceded by text which attempts to place each occupational category into an historic context. Selective profiles of representative individuals citing specific achievements in their respective fields are included as well. In the introduction, entitled "Broadly Speaking, Just Who Were the German-Americans," the author examines the data from the thirteen directories in great detail. For example, there are tables dividing the immigrants into areas of origin, and tables exploring dates of immigration. The introduction also attempts to help the reader bridge the linguistic barriers created when reverting American names back to the original German. To this end he has created seven basic rules of name recognition, and has also provided a table listing the twenty-five most common German names and their American English equivalents. The appendices include an abridged glossary of European localities, an every-name index, and three separate bibliographies. Also included is an abridged list of contemporary German-American organizations operating both here and abroad.

With the help of over one hundred illustrations spanning three centuries, Richard Cohen investigates the role of visual images in European Jewish history. In these images and objects that reflect, refract, and also shape daily experience, he finds new and illuminating insights into Jewish life in the modern period. Pointing to recent scholarship that overturns the stereotype of Jews as people of the text, unconcerned with the visual, Cohen shows how the coming of the modern period expanded the relationship of Jews to the visual realm far beyond the religious context. In one such manifestation, orthodox Jewry made icons of popular tabbis, creating images that helped to bridge the sacred and the secular. A deft reinterpretation of the most zealously interpreted picture in the Western canon as a therapeutic artifact. Albrecht Dürer's famous portrayal of creative effort in paralysis, the unsurpassed masterpiece of copperplate engraving titled Melencolia I, has stood for centuries as a pictorial summa of knowledge about the melancholic temperament, a dense allegory of the limits of earthbound arts and sciences and the impossibility of attaining perfection. Dubbed the “image of images” for being the most zealously interpreted picture in the Western canon, Melencolia I also presides over the origins of modern iconology, art history's own science of meaning. Yet we are left with a clutter of mutually contradictory theories, a historiographic ruin that confirms the mood of its object. In Perfection's Therapy, Mitchell Merback reopens the case file and argues for a hidden intentionality in Melencolia's opacity, its structural “chaos,” and its resistance to allegorical closure. That intentionality, he argues, points toward a fascinating possibility never before considered: that Dürer's masterpiece is not only an arresting diagnosis of melancholic distress, but an innovative instrument for its undoing. Merback deftly resituates Dürer's image within the long history of the therapeutic artifact. Placing Dürer's therapeutic project in dialogue with that of humanism's founder, Francesco Petrarch, Merback also unearths Dürer's ambition to act as a physician of the soul. This welcome volume encompasses the entire history of the bassoon, from its origins five centuries ago to its place in twenty-first-century music. James Kopp draws on new archival research and many years' experience playing the instrument to provide an up-to-date and lively portrait of today's bassoon and its intriguing predecessors. He discusses the bassoon's makers, its players, its repertory, its myths, and its audiences, all in unprecedented detail. The bassoon was invented in Italy in response to the need for a bass-register double-reed woodwind suitable for processionals and marching. Composers were quick to exploit its agility and unique timbre. Later, during the reign of Louis XIV, the instrument underwent a major redesign, giving voice to its tenor register. In the early 1800s new scientific precepts propelled a wave of invention and design modifications. In the twentieth century, the multiplicity of competing bassoon designs narrowed to a German (or Heckel) type and a French type, the latter now nearly extinct. The author examines the acoustical consequences of these various redesigns. He also offers new coverage of the bassoon's social history, including its roles in the military and church and its global use during the European Colonial period.
