Otherwise the writing of it should have been left to a philosopher, and that I do not pretend to be. Still, the ground covered lies between the two subjects (or, rather, overlaps both) and might therefore be considered open to occupancy by students of either subject. Theoretically, there is no reason why a philosopher's religious deductions should be any more reliable than the philosophical descriptions of a student of religion, for just as philosophy has its intricacies so religion also has its subtleties, and the subtleties of religion can be caught only through that insight which is bestowed by an intimate historical understanding. Excerpt from Freedom and Authority in Religion The argument which we ofier in these pages recognizes fully the value of the distinctive scientific criterion of explanation as employed hitherto, but it denies with emphasis its adequacy for the re ligious life. Nor does the argument depend for its cogency upon the outcome of pending discussions as to the existence in the biological world of a prin ciple of creative evolution as urged by Professor Bergson, or upon something else over and above mechanism and chemical agencies which may lead to the discovery of a second criterion of scientific explanation. The bases of religious knowledge lie in personality and personal relationships. This we undertake to show. Along with this we have sought to indicate incidentally to what extent the current effort to make religion and theology scientific has been misleading. Until the conception of science obtains a wider meaning such an effort either leads too far or it does not lead far enough; too far in that, if the scientific criterion of physical continuity is consistently and thoroughly applied everywhere, God and religion vanish; or not far enough, in that, if deductions from the plane of nature to a sphere above nature be the sum total of the outcome. Excerpt from Religion and Science: From Galileo to Bergson The chapters which follow are not intended as even a slight sketch of the history of Thought since the Renaissance. Their object is more modest, i.e. to illustrate the thesis that, mankind, being "incurably religious," insists (however hopeless the enterprise may sometimes seem) upon interpreting the universe spiritually. Thus it is quite natural that only a few typical names should find their places here: and often no sufficient reason may appear for one being included rather than another. For instance, in the tenth chapter, T. H. Green, F. H. Bradley, and A. J. Balfour are mentioned, while Martineau and the Cairds are passed over. Needless to say, there was no doctrinal prejudice here. Again, in the fourth chapter, Pascal is dealt with at some length, but Boehme, an equally important thinker, is ignored. And so on. I should like to acknowledge here my obligation to Dr. Mercer, Canon of Chester, for his advice upon books, specially with regard to material for the final chapters. Also to the Rev. H. D. A.
