Excerpt from Bengough's Chalk-Talks: A Series of Platform Addresses on Various Topics, With Reproductions of the Impromptu Drawings With Which They Were Illustrated The dawn of my ambition to become a Cartoonist is dated as far back as 1870. Of course, for some years prior to that - I refuse to be more specific - I was much given to the lead-pencil. I had developed a facility at drawing which was recognized by my school mates, and even by that formidable personage, the "Master," who, I gratefully remember, made me a present on a faraway Merry Christmas, of a box of paints, anticipating, no doubt, that it was my destiny to shine amongst the great ones of the then future Canadian Royal Academy. It was also significant, perhaps, that one of the books presented to me as a prize for general proficiency in learning at the same institution was a work on "The Boyhood of Great Artists." I cannot help thinking that this "reward of merit" was more of a testimony to the liberal views of the examiners on the subject of proficiency, than to my own deserts. Contested Spaces, Counter-narratives, and Culture from Below in Canada and Québec explores strategies for reading space and conflict in Canadian and Québécois literature and cultural performances, positing questions such as: how do these texts and performances produce and contest spatial practices? What are the roles of the nation, city, community, and individual subject in reproducing space, particularly in times of global hegemony and neocolonialism? And in what ways do marginalized individuals and communities represent, contest, or appropriate spaces through counter-narratives and expressions of culture from below? Many writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries emphasized the virtues of early rural pioneers and life on the land as a general criticism of what they perceived to be the negative, alienating influence of Ontario’s rapid urban and industrial expansion. Such work often highlighted the difficulties the recent emigrant faced: the clearing of forest and the breaking of new ground, the isolation and long Canadian winters; however they in turn celebrated the progress demonstrated in the pioneer’s domination over nature, the establishment of thriving communities and the extension of transportation networks. William Wye Smith, a popular nineteenth century Upper Canadian poet, was no exception. Smith prepared his Canadian Reminiscences, a hand-written compilation of anecdotes collected during his lifetime that relate to his experience as journalist, clergyman and son of Scottish settlers, to provide his own unique perspective of pioneer life. This fully annotated version of Smith’s unpublished manuscript highlights Smith’s unwitting testimony to the social life of the province, his relationship to the construction and maintenance of Scottish and Canadian identity, as well as his position in literary history.
