Book Description
Excerpt from Beaumarchais and His Times: Sketches of French Society in the Eighteenth Century From Unpublished Documents Accompanied by a grandson of Beaumarchais, I one day entered a house in the Rue du pas-de-la-mule. We went up stairs to a garret into which no one had penetrated for several years, and on Opening the door - which was not done without difficulty - raised a cloud of dust which almost suffocated us. I ran to the window for air; but, like the door, the window had so completely lost the habit of opening, that it resisted all my efforts: the wood, swollen and rotten from dampness, threatened to fall to pieces beneath my hand, when I took the wise resolution of breaking two of the panes, and we were at length able to breathe and cast our eyes freely around us. The little room was covered with boxes and cases filled with papers. Before me, in this uninhabited and silent cell - be neath this thick layer of dust, I had all that remained of one of the most lively wits - one of the most noisy, agitated, and varied existences which belonged to the last century. I had before me all the papers left fifty-four years ago by the author of the Marriage of Figaro. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Beaumarchais the Merchant: Letters of Theveneau De Francey, 1777-1780; Read Before the New York Historical Society, April 5. 1870 by John Bigelow It is to be regretted that so great and gifted a benefactor of our country should have allowed the sentimental and the commercial functions of his firm to become so confounded, that, in attempting to separate them, the course which our Government felt obliged to take has not only prevented any suitable recognition of his services to the United States, but sent him to his grave, as he no doubt thought, and as many of his country people still think the victim of Repub lican ingratitude. It is not my purpose to investigate the justice of this reproach, nor to attempt to define precisely the place which History should assign to this gifted Frenchman, among the instruments of Providence most conspicuous in laying the foundations of our Republic. I have only some new testimony to contribute in aid of those who hereafter may under take to determine these questions, - testi mony of which your Executive Commit tee have requested me to give you some account. The nature and history of my offering shall be set forth in few words. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
"This delightful rogue of many talents set up a company to front for the French and Spanish regimes secretly supplying weapons, munitions, clothing and food to the struggling rebels."--American HistoryThe outrageous true story of the French plot to supply arms and ammunition to Washington's Continental Army, and the bold French spy, inventor, playwright, and rogue behind it allPierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais was an eighteenth-century French inventor, famed playwright, and upstart near-aristocrat in the court of King Louis XVI. In 1776, he conceived an audacious plan to send aid to the American rebels. What's more, he convinced the king to bankroll the project, and singlehandedly carried it out. By war's end, he had supplied Washington's army with most of its weapons and powder, though he was never paid or acknowledged by the United States. To some, he was a dashing hero--a towering intellect who saved the American Revolution. To others, he was pure rogue--a double-dealing adventurer who stopped at nothing to advance his fame and fortune. In fact, he was both, and more: an advisor to kings, an arms dealer, and author of some of the most enduring works of the stage, including The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville.
