"Answering the Question: What Is Enlightenment?" is a 1784 essay by the philosopher Immanuel Kant. In the December 1784 publication of the Berlinische Monatsschrift (Berlin Monthly), edited by Friedrich Gedike and Johann Erich Biester, Kant replied to the question posed a year earlier by the Reverend Johann Friedrich Zöllner, who was also an official in the Prussian government. Zöllner's question was addressed to a broad intellectual public community, in reply to Biester's essay entitled: "Proposal, not to engage the clergy any longer when marriages are conducted" (April 1783) and a number of leading intellectuals replied with essays, of which Kant's is the most famous and has had the most impact. Kant's opening paragraph of the essay is a much-cited definition of a lack of enlightenment as people's inability to think for themselves due not to their lack of intellect, but lack of courage. Kant's essay also addressed the causes of a lack of enlightenment and the preconditions necessary to make it possible for people to enlighten themselves. He held it necessary that all church and state paternalism be abolished and people be given the freedom to use their own intellect. Kant praised Frederick II of Prussia for creating these preconditions. Kant focused on religious issues, saying that "our rulers" had less interest in telling citizens what to think in regard to artistic and scientific issues.

Nahezu jeder bringt den Begriff der Aufklärung mit Kant und einer Hell-und-Dunkel-Metaphorik in Verbindung. Doch in der Dialektik der Aufklärung wird der Aufklärungsbegriff auf ein Neues erörtert und vor allem auf die heutige Zeit angewendet und nicht als historisch-vergangen betrachtet. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Begriff der Aufklärung, wie er allgemein bekannt ist und verwendet wird, und mit der Erörterung des Aufklärungsbegriffs nach dem ersten Kapitel der Dialektik der Aufklärung. Auf den weiteren Text wird nicht eingegangen, da vor allem das erste Kapitel für den Zweck dieser Arbeit den Aufklärungsbegriff darzustellen am wichtigsten ist. Zunächst wird hierfür die allgemein bekannte Verwendung und Definition des Aufklärungsbegriffs dargestellt. Anschließend soll an Kants Text in der "Berlinische[n] Monatsschrift" der Aufklärungsbegriff dargelegt werden und gezeigt, wie Kant zu seiner Definition von Aufklärung kommt. Hierbei wird auch die Notwendigkeit einer Aufklärung genauer betrachtet, da hier der Ursprung des Aufklärungsgedanken liegt. Abschließend wird für das zweite Kapitel noch eine chronologische Entwicklung und Verwendung des Aufklärungsbegriffs aufgezeigt, um zu zeigen, dass Aufklärung nicht nur für Kant ein bedeutendes Thema war, sondern auch vor und nach ihm Andere sich mit dem Thema auseinandergesetzt haben. Im dritten Kapitel wird dann das erste Kapitel der Dialektik der Aufklärung bearbeitet, wobei mit Hilfe von drei Unterkapiteln aufgezeigt wird, wie die Autoren zu der These gelangen, dass „(...) die Menschheit, anstatt in einen wahrhaft menschlichen Zustand einzutreten, in eine neue Art von Barbarei versinkt.“ Dafür wird zuerst auf den Mythos eingegangen, da dieser der Beginn des Kreislaufs ist, indem sich die Aufklärung laut den Autoren bewegt. Bedeutung und Gefahren des Mythos legen die Grundlage für eine Argumentation gegen die positive Definition von Aufklärung. Im Unterkapitel der Aufklärung selbst wird der Begriff der Aufklärung nach Horkheimer und Adorno erörtert und deren Unterstellungen und Forderungen an die Aufklärung dargelegt. Im Anschluss werden die Ansichten der Autoren gegenüber der Gesellschaft aufgezeigt. Dabei stehen die Gegensätze elitäre Gruppen und Masse im Vordergrund. Abschließend wird im letzten Kapitel der eigenen Reflektionen aufgezeigt, wohin das Denken der Dialektik der Aufklärung führt.
