Book Description
In 1918, Canadian Pacific steamship Princess Sophia ran aground on Alaska’s Vanderbilt reef. She sat there for two terrifying days before sinking in a raging snowstorm. Seventy-six years later, a cruise ship called the Star Princess was sailing in the same stretch of water — and Alaska’s worst maritime disaster nearly repeated itself.

Book Description
In this riveting account, historian Stephen Ambrose continues where he left off in his #1 bestseller D-Day. Ambrose again follows the individual characters of this noble, brutal, and tragic war, from the high command down to the ordinary soldier, drawing on hundreds of interviews to re-create the war experience with startling clarity and immediacy. From the hedgerows of Normandy to the overrunning of Germany, Ambrose tells the real story of World War II from the perspective of the men and women who fought it. From June 7, 1944, on the beaches of Normandy to the final battles of Germany, acclaimed historian Stephen E. Ambrose draws on hundreds of interviews and oral histories from men on both sides to write a compelling and comprehensive portrait of the Citizen Soldiers who made up the U.S. Army. Ambrose re-creates the experiences of the individuals who fought the battle, from high command - Eisenhower, Bradley, and Patton - on down to the enlisted men. Within the chronological story, there are chapters on medics, nurses, and doctors; on the quartermasters; on the replacements; on what it was like to spend a night on the front lines; on sad sacks, cowards, and criminals; on Christmas 1944; and on weapons of all kinds. In this engrossing history, Ambrose reveals the learning process of a great army - how to cross rivers, how to fight in snow or hedgerows, how to fight in cities, how to coordinate air and ground campaigns, and how citizens become soldiers. Throughout, the perspective is that of the enlisted men and junior officers - and how decisions of the brass affected them.

Book Description
Not like the others . . . Bonfire Beach, South Carolina. The exclusive beachfront community is old money, the best of everything, and its genteel residents don’t take kindly to those who aren’t like them. And to say that Stacy Storm isn’t like them is an understatement. For one thing, he’s a disgraced reality TV star and tabloid fodder. For another, he’s a world-renowned psychic proven to be a fraud - at least in part. For a third, he’s moved into the notorious McClean mansion - the very mansion whose relevance in Bonfire Beach history all would prefer to forget. And that’s just what the people of Bonfire know about. From childhood on, Stacy has been different. Neglected by his mother and bullied by his peers, he learned in his teens that he is, in fact, very much wanted in another realm, of which very few others are even aware. His gift is a double-edged sword, bringing him validation and approval by way of a daily nightmare that stars only Stacy - and them. He hates them. He fears them. He needs them. And he’s come to Bonfire Beach to find them. This is the beginning.

Book Description
Despite declining stocks worldwide and increasing health risks, artisanal whaling remains a cultural practice tied to nature’s rhythms. The Wake of the Whale presents the art, history, and challenge of whaling in the Caribbean and North Atlantic, based on a decade of award-winning fieldwork. Sightings of pilot whales in the frigid Nordic waters have drawn residents of the Faroe Islands to their boats and beaches for nearly a thousand years. Down in the tropics, around the islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, artisanal whaling is a younger trade, shaped by the legacies of slavery and colonialism but no less important to the local population. Each culture, Russell Fielding shows, has developed a distinct approach to whaling that preserves key traditions while adapting to threats of scarcity, the requirements of regulation, and a growing awareness of the humane treatment of animals. Yet these strategies struggle to account for the risks of regularly eating meat contaminated with methylmercury and other environmental pollutants introduced from abroad. Fielding considers how these and other factors may change whaling cultures forever, perhaps even bringing an end to this way of life. A rare mix of scientific and social insight, The Wake of the Whale raises compelling questions about the place of cultural traditions in the contemporary world and the sacrifices we must make for sustainability.
