Book Description
Available online: http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:norden:org:diva-6174 The project proposes and describes techniques, which can be considered as best available techniques (BAT) used on biogas plants in the Nordic countries in order to give inspiration to the sector and authorities. The project describes the size and characteristics of the biogas industry and the regulatory framework in the countries. Further the project describes the potential environmental impact from different types of biogas plants and utilization of the digestate and energy. The plants included in the project have a permitted treatment capacity larger than 30 and less than 100 tonnes of feedstock per day. Ten BAT candidates are discussed in the report. Among those are location of biogas plant in the planning stage, selection of suitable feedstock in co-digestion, handling of air emissions and quality of biogas. Areas of research and development in the biogas sector are also discussed.

Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2021-509/ The objectives of this report have been to present an overview of the surface treatment (STM) industry and the legal framework for implementation of the IED directive in the Nordic countries. The project describes currently used Best Available Techniques (BATs) in the STM industry in the Nordic countries. Further the project describes the key environmental aspects of the STM sector relating to the use of raw materials, resource use of energy and water, emissions to surface- and groundwater, the generation of solid and liquid wastes. For the final part of the project, twelve BAT candidates and four new emerging techniques are described. The techniques are focusing on resource use, emissions to water, waste management, circular economy, energy use. Optimisation, closed loop systems, digitalisation and automation are common denominators.

Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2023-514/ An appeal of land-based aquaculture is that emissions can be theoretically contained and valorized, but techniques for reusing emissions are constantly changing. In order for the Nordic aquaculture industry to grow in an environmentally sustainable manner, information on the best techniques must be disseminated. That is why the Nordic Council of Ministers, BAT group requested a report on the Best Available Techniques for the reduction and reuse of emissions from land-based aquaculture. The report discusses the current state of Nordic aquaculture, including policy specific to land-based production. The techniques to reduce, reuse, and valorize the major emission types from land-based aquaculture are described in detail. The information within the report is of use to a wide number of stakeholders including operators, policy makers, environmental authorities, investors, and entrepreneurs.

Book Description
This study made it clear that there are several BAT-level technologies, processes etc. already implemented in the Waste Treatment Industries in the Nordic Countries. The study was carried out in cooperation with these industries. The general objective was to identify a total of approx. 60 industries and select and describe in more detail a total of approx. 30 relevant industries. Among the total of 57 identified industries 49 are classified as "Established techniques" and 8 are classified as "Emerging techniques". All the objects were screened for environmental and climate impacts and 29 were selected based on level of achieved impact.

Book Description
The cheramic sector covers very different types of products made of mostly inorganic and non-metallic materials by a firing process. This report covers the manufacture of the following product groups: Coarse ceramics: • expanded clay aggregates • vitrified clay pipes • bricks and roof tiles • refractory products Fine ceramics: • wall and floor tiles • household ceramics • sanitary ware • technical ceramics • inorganic bonded abrasives. The report was initiated by the BAT Group of the Nordic Council of Ministers and financed by the Working Group for Sustainable Consumption and Production. The results will serve as Nordic input to the EU revision of BAT conclusions for the ceramic sector under the Industrial Emissions Directive. The report also covers the Nordic ceramics manufacturing plants below the IED capacity threshold: that is, plants with an environmental permit.

Book Description
With the increasing use of biomass fuels the varieties of sources for biomass have expanded to almost all possible combustible matter with biological origin. The increasing scale in solid biomass fuel production and utilisation at the combustion plants of the wide variety of biomass fuels have contributed to littering, dust, odor and noise emissions of the production chain. The report aims to provide information for operators, environmental consultants and competent environmental authorities on what is considered BAT, as defined in the IPPC directive (2008/1/EC), in biomass processing and handling as well as the production of pellets from biomass. The project gives a brief description of commonly used solid biomass fuels and the processes, handling and storage of these biomasses in the Nordic countries covering processes from production site to the point of use. Environmental emissions, sources of waste and other relevant environmental aspects from commonly used processes, included raw material and energy use, chemical use and emissions to soil are also included in the report.

Book Description
Abstract: This study has evaluated the development of biogas technology in three Nordic countries and analysed the effects of using nine model energy crops in biogas plants. The study compares the global warming impacts and the energy balance for the nine crops used for heat and power production. The energy balances and impacts on greenhouse gases of the studied crops differ between the countries. In Sweden and Denmark, the same crops turned out to be the most promising in terms of energy yield and impact on greenhouse gases. In general, the same crops that score high in terms of energy yield also score high in reducing the amount of greenhouse gases. Based on the examined parameters, it can be concluded that the most promising crops are Jerusalem artichoke, beets, maize, and, in Finland, reed canary grass as well
