Book Description
In 1827, a group of Baltimore capitalists feared their city would be left out of the lucrative East Coast-to-Midwest trade that other eastern cities were developing; thus, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was chartered. Political pressure kept the B&O out of Pennsylvania at first, and so track crews headed for what is now West Virginia, building mountainous routes with torturous grades to Wheeling and Parkersburg. Eventually the B&O financed and acquired a spiderweb of branch lines that covered much of the northern and central parts of the Mountain State. This book takes a close look at the line's locomotives, passenger and freight trains, structures, and, most importantly, its people who endeared their company to generations of travelers, shippers, and small Appalachian communities.

Book Description
This book is an album of 135 full color photos depicting trains operating exclusively in West Virginia on the Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, and Western Maryland railroads during the era when they were part of the combine's Chessie System. Most photos range from 1972 to the late 1980s and show heavy trains powered by multiple locomotives hauling the black diamonds that were so much a part of these railroads character. The bright yellow/blue/vermilion paint scheme was always attractive to employees, railfans, modelers, and the public, and is fondly remembered. In addition to many interesting trains and operational situations, the beautiful rugged scenery of West Virginia is featured in clear, bright color photos taken by Everett N. Young, E. Roy Ward, Aruthur E. House, James Moseley, E. Sterling Hanger, Jr. and Thomas W. Dixon, Jr.
