Book Description
Recent Advances in Liquid-liquid Extraction focuses on the applications of liquid extraction. The selection first discusses solvent extraction. Concerns include organic and inorganic separations, mass transfer process, solvent extraction economics, and coalescence in liquid-liquid systems. The book focuses on the chemistry of solvent extraction. Extraction by acidic organophosphorus compounds; extraction by phosphorus-bonded oxygen-donor solvents; extraction by high-molecular weight amines; and synergistic extraction are elaborated. The book also focuses on industrial organic processes; industrial contacting equipment; response characteristics and control of extraction processes; and calculation of contactors with longitudinal mixing. The selection presents the study of longitudinal mixing in liquid-liquid contactors. Rotating disc contactors, packed columns, vibrating plate extractors, and Oldshue-Rushton columns are described. The text also discusses heat transfer by direct liquid-liquid contact and the coalescence of liquid droplets and liquid dispersion. The selection is a vital source of data for readers interested in liquid extraction.

Book Description
"A steady state approach was followed in this investigation to determine the effects of liquid and gas flow rates, packing size and packing height on the interphase mass transfer coefficient and gas phase axial mixing Peclet numbers. Experiments were performed on the absorption of carbon dioxide from a mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen in a packed column. Absorption was performed using 1/4, 3/8 and l/2 inch Raschig rings, with a packing height of 3 feet and also using 3/8 inch Raschig rings with a packing height of 5 feet. The liquid and gas flow ranges used were 2865 to 5680 lb./hr.sq.ft. and 5.0 to 7.4 lb./hr.sq.ft., respectively. Three mathematical models, viz. (i) plug flow in both the gas and liquid phases, (ii) axial mixing in gas phase and plug flow in liquid phase, and (iii) axial mixing in both gas and liquid phases, were used. It is found that axial mixing in the gas phase increases with increases in liquid flow rate, packing size and packing height. The behavior of apparent and true mass transfer coefficients indicates a decrease in axial mixing with increases in gas flow rates. However, axial mixing is found to be small under the experimental conditions used in this investigation. The gas phase Peclet numbers obtained in this investigation are about fifty times greater than reported by workers using a transient technique under the same conditions. Correlations for the apparent and true over-all liquid phase mass transfer coefficients are also presented"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book Description
The subject of this book is to study the porous media and the transport processes occur there. As a first step, the authors discuss several techniques for artificial representation of porous. Afterwards, they describe the single and multi phase flows in simplistic and complex porous structures in terms of macroscopic and microscopic equations as well as of their analytical and numerical solutions. Furthermore, macroscopic quantities such as permeability are introduced and reviewed. The book also discusses with mass transport processes in the porous media which are further strengthen by experimental validation and specific technological applications. This book makes use of state-of-the-art techniques for the modeling of transport processes in porous structures, and considers of realistic sorption mechanisms. It the applies advanced mathematical techniques for upscaling of the major quantities, and presents the experimental investigation and application, namely, experimental methods for the measurement of relevant transport properties. The main benefit of the book is that it discusses all the topics related to transport in porous media (including state-of-the-art applications) and presents some of the most important theoretical, numerical and experimental developments in porous media domain, providing a self-contained major reference that is appealing to both the scientists and the engineers. At the same time, these topics encounter a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines, such as chemical, civil, agricultural, mechanical engineering. The book is divided in several chapters that intend to be a resume of the current state of knowledge for benefit of related professionals and scientists.
