Author: Pasquale Frascolla
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134336381
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 303
Book Description
Understanding Wittgenstein's Tractatus provides an accessible and yet novel discussion of all the major themes of the Tractatus. The book starts by setting out the history and structure of the Tractatus. It then investigates the two main dimensions of the early Wittgenstein's thought, corresponding to the division between what language can say by means of its propositions and what language can only show. It goes on to discuss picture theory, logical atomism, extensionality, truth-functions and truth-operations, semantics, metalogic and mathematics, solipsism and value, metaphysics, and finally, Wittgenstein's idea of the duty of maintaining silence. Frascolla also proposes a new interpretation of the ontology of the Tractatus. Based on the identification of objects with qualia, the argument put forward in the book challenges the currently prevalent ideas of the ‘New Wittgenstein'. The paradoxical nature of the Tractatus itself, and the theme of "throwing away the ladder", are thus revisited in a new key. Understanding Wittgenstein's Tractatus is essential reading for anyone wishing to further their insight into one of the most influential works of twentieth-century philosophy.

Werner Hegemann And The Search For Universal Urbanism
Author: Craseman Christine Collins
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
ISBN: 9780393731569
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 426
Book Description
"Werner Hegemann (1881-1936), a German-born multidisciplinary critic of the built environment, was well known in Europe and the United States in his lifetime. A critic rather than a designer, he did not fit easily into any school or category. To those seeking to promote modernism, Hegemann was something of an awkward figure - influential and undoubtedly authoritative but unorthodox. Today, however, when studies of modernism have largely shed their proselytizing role, he is of great relevance. Our interest now is less in those who proposed the answers than in those who asked the questions - and particularly the way in which those questions were framed. For this Hegemann is a key figure." "Based on documentation largely unavailable in English - including Hegemann's published and unpublished writings, his correspondence, his diaries, the author's interviews, archival materials lent to her by Hegemann's widow, and the author's own substantial collection - this is the first comprehensive study of Hegemann for historians, architects, and urbanists."--BOOK JACKET.
