Book Description
Excerpt from Automatic Screw Machine Practice, Vol. 3: Circular Form and Cut-Off Tools for the Brown and Sharpe Automatic Screw Machine It is obvious that, as the condi-tiofis'flfidér 3which the work is done and the limits allowed on it vafy be impracticable to lay down hard and fast rules in: mate; the application of circular tools, but the following suggestions will be found applicable to general conditions. At D, Fig. 3, is shown a method sometimes used to advan tage in making shouldered screws or other pieces of a similar char acter. This forming operation is not recommended when the piece to be made is required to be very accurate, as a slight eccentricity in the spring collet would cause the part f to be out of true with the part a. In cases where accuracy is required. The part a could be roughed down with the cut-off tool and a light finishing cut taken with a box-tool. At D, is shown an improved method of forming the same piece, as the form tool here removes the burr from the head. Book Description
Excerpt from Automatic Screw Machines: A Treatise on the Construction, Design, and Operation of Automatic Screw, Machines and Their Tool Equipment The class of automatic machine tools commonly known as screw machines represents one of the most important developments in the machine tool field, and includes ingenious mechanisms which may be studied with profit by all who are interested in mechanical movements and modem methods of manufacture. This book deals with five distinct branches of automatic screw machine practice. It covers the design and construction of different well-known types of single-and multiple-spindle machines, the tool equipment used for various classes of work, the methods of adjusting or setting-up machines made by different manufacturers, the design of screw machine cams, and the application of machines of this t3e to both t3rpical and unusual operations. The descriptions of machines are confined principally to the important fundamental features of the design, and deal especially with those mechanisms which control parts that must operate automatically and in accordance with the nature of the work being produced. The machines illustrated were selected as representative types, each embodying important developments in screw machine design. While designers have incorporated many ingenious ideas in automatic screw machines, the tool equipment and auxiliary attachments used in conjunction with these machines are not lacking either in cleverness of design, or effectiveness in increasing the efficiency and range of machine tools of this class, to include an endless variety of work. The various types of tools used for turning, boring, recessing, threading, knurling, etc., are described, and the methods of applying these tools are illustrated by practical examples.
