Book Description
"The Pen's Excellencie" selects one hundred manuscript treasures from the roughly 55,000 manuscripts at the Folger Shakespeare Library. It provides a window onto a vast landscape of experience, seen over the past seven centuries.Perhaps the only common feature of these remarkable texts is that someone wrote them with his or her own hand. Since they are notable examples carefully culled from many thousands of manuscripts, the writers tend to be reasonably well known - John Donne, Edmund Spenser, James Boswell, George Eliot, and letters by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Verdi, Dickens, Twain, Whitman, and Buffalo Bill. Both manuscripts that are priceless in terms of literary or historic interest and those that are fascinating or beautiful to look at are represented. While there are a handful of colorful, attention-grabbing manuscripts, most are deceivingly humble at first glance, written in inscrutable hands in brown ink. The earliest item, a copy of twelve works by Aristotle, is from the early fourteenth century. The latest item, from 1928, is a short poem by A. A. Milne.

Making Mathematics Come to Life
Author: Oleg A. Ivanov
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821848089
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 349
Book Description
``It is difficult to define the genre of the book. It is not a problem book, nor a textbook, nor a `book for reading about mathematics'. It is most of all reminiscent of a good lecture course, from which a thoughtful student comes away with more than was actually spoken about in the lectures.'' --from the Preface by A. S. Merkurjev If you are acquainted with mathematics at least to the extent of a standard high school curriculum and like it enough to want to learn more, and if, in addition, you are prepared to do some serious work, then you should start studying this book. An understanding of the material of the book requires neither a developed ability to reason abstractly nor skill in using the refined techniques of mathematical analysis. In each chapter elementary problems are considered, accompanied by theoretical material directly related to them. There are over 300 problems in the book, most of which are intended to be solved by the reader. In those places in the book where it is natural to introduce concepts outside the high school syllabus, the corresponding definitions are given with examples. And in order to bring out the meaning of such concepts clearly, appropriate (but not too many) theorems are proved concerning them. Unfortunately, what is sometimes studied at school under the name ``mathematics'' resembles real mathematics not any closer than a plucked flower gathering dust in a herbarium or pressed between the pages of a book resembles that same flower in the meadow besprinkled with dewdrops sparkling in the light of the rising sun.

Ecology, Conservation and Management of Wild Pigs and Peccaries
Author: Mario Melletti
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316947173
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 1417
Book Description
Wild pigs inhabit vast areas in Europe, Southern Asia and Africa, and have been introduced in North and South America, while feral pigs are widespread in Australia and New Zealand. Many wild pig species are threatened with extinction, but Eurasian wild boar populations, however, are increasing in many regions. Covering all wild pig and peccary species, the Suidae and Tayassuidae families, this comprehensive review presents new information about the evolution, taxonomy and domestication of wild pigs and peccaries alongside novel case studies on conservation activities and management. One hundred leading experts from twenty five countries synthesise understanding of this group of species; discussing current research, and gaps in the knowledge of researchers, conservation biologists, zoologists, wildlife managers and students. This beautifully illustrated reference includes the long history of interactions between wild pigs and humans, the benefits some species have brought us and their role and impact on natural ecosystems.
