Martin Van Buren (December 5, 1782 - July 24, 1862), an American statesman who served as the eighth president of the United States from 1837 to 1841. He was a founder of the Democratic Party, and served in multiple offices from New York state, including governor, United States Senator, state attorney general, and state senator. Nationally he served under President Andrew Jackson as Minister to Great Britain, United States Secretary of State, and was elected as Vice President of the United States for Jackson's second term. He was elected as the 8th president of the United States in 1836, but lost his 1840 reelection bid to Whig Party nominee William Henry Harrison. Later in life, Van Buren emerged as an elder statesman and an important anti-slavery leader, who led the Free Soil Party ticket in the 1848 presidential election. --Wikipedia. Van Buren was the first president to be born an American citizen (his predecessors were born British subjects prior to the American Revolution), and is also the only president not to have spoken English as a first language, having grown up speaking Dutch.
